Founded in 1889, Hamilton Public Library (HPL) is one of the oldest library systems. The Local History & Archives department (LH&A) collects and holds material that document the growth, development, and activities of the Hamilton-Wentworth region. LH&A has a wide range of historical materials including rare books, photographs, maps and video and sound recordings.

LH&A has over 3 million photographs, dating from 1860. To date, more than 13,000 historical images have been digitized and are available online through the PreVIEW website.
