Biographical history
Peter Stevens (March 16, 1963 – February 25, 2015), was a freelance photographer, graphic designer, art director and magazine editor. Peter studied Graphic Design at Sheridan College and worked in the design and advertising field for almost 20 years. He served as Art Director with Wordsmith Design and Advertising (Part of the Pier 8 Group). Peter was a founding member of the Hamilton Photo Union and served the organization as a board member from 1982-1986. He was also the Photo Editor for Broadway Magazine (an alternative news source for Hamilton), Style Magazine and The Hammer Magazine. Peter Stevens spent 25 years capturing the essence of the arts scene in Hamilton and had a very large impact on the arts community. His work was exhibited at the Hammer Gallery, the b Contemporary Gallery, Broadway Gallery, Gallery on 4, the Photo Union Gallery and the Transit Gallery.
Custodial history
Peter Stevens donated the materials to the Local History & Archives Department in July of 2006. In October of 2014, Peter Stevens requested to have a portion of his donation (negatives not related to the historical development of the city of Hamilton), returned to him. The request was granted by the Local History & Archives Department and the specific material requested was de-accessioned and returned to him.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of predominantly graphic materials, including photographs and negatives of individuals, organizations, places, events, and non-human subjects, along with some textual documents consisting mostly of advertising and marketing materials. The fonds contains eight series including, human subjects, associations and organizations, places, events, non-human subjects, advertising and marketing, Hamilton magazines and random photographs, negatives and contact sheets.

General note
Multiple duplicates of photographs and textual documents were removed along with a file on the One in Million Flag Challenge that contained a Canadian flag still in it's original packaging, two identical certificates presented to Peter Stevens for his participation in the flag challenge, as well as some documentation on the challenge, since this material was not relevant to the fonds.
