Correspondence

Series consists of letters of appreciation from various organizations, agencies and individuals such as hospitals, nursing homes, shelters and grateful parents, for Jimmy Lomax’s Santa visits and his distribution of toys and items from Operation Santa Claus, letters of donation, Christmas and thank you cards, as well as letters to Santa. Many of the letters mention and appreciate Jimmy’s kindness and generosity towards the less fortunate in society. Some of the cards and letters were also addressed to the Lomax family, including his wife Susan, and his son Ryan, for their part in Operation Santa Claus role-playing as Mrs. Claus and Santa Junior.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs of Jimmy Lomax, his wife Susan and his son, Ryan, as well as various individuals and events pertaining to the fundraising of his Operation Santa Claus project. This series begins with some historical photographs of hospital visits undertaken by previous individuals who played Santa Claus from the 1930s to the 1950s. This series on photographs also includes a few images of Harold Alkerton who was Jimmy Lomax’s Santa when Lomax was sick in the hospital as a child. Alkerton was the person who inspired Jimmy to play the role of Santa himself to other unfortunate children and adults. The photographs in this series also highlight the beginning of Lomax’s role as Santa Claus, Lomax family members, the Lomax family trip to Disney World, which they were awarded by the Hamilton business community, Santa visits to families, organizations and institutions, Operation Santa Claus fundraisers such as garage sales, picnics, toy rides, among others, as well as work parties, Jimmy Lomax on parade, the Santa Van and photographs of his awards and recognition. This series also includes a file of photographs with little archival context and unidentified individuals.

Series consists of certificates and letters of recognition and congratulations from prominent politicians for receiving various awards such as the Order of Canada, the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, the Outstanding Hamiltonian of the Year award, as well as his 50th anniversary of Operation Santa Claus. Dignitaries sending their congratulations include the Right Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Governor General Michaelle Jean, former and current mayors of Hamilton, city councilors, and a few Members of Parliament from various political parties. The series also consists of invitations to awards nights, a Hamilton Tiger-Cat Football Club Touchline Pass ticket no.1 with Jimmy Lomax’s name on it, programs for awards nights, as well as plaques.

The material in the fonds consists of predominantly textual and graphic materials and includes 17 objects. The fonds contains 7 series including, correspondence, newspaper clippings, publicity, artwork, photographs, scrapbooks, and awards and recognition such as certificates of congratulations, invitations, awards night programs, and plaques, all pertaining to Jimmy Lomax, his family and Operation Santa Claus, which helped raise money annually to distribute toys and other items to less fortunate children and individuals during the Christmas season.

Series consists of publicity for fundraisers for Operation Santa Claus such as flyers, newspaper advertisement inserts, and general notices. The series also consists of magazine publications featuring biographical information on Jimmy, as well as publicity for Operation Santa Claus. The magazines include Stelco Flashes, Hamilton Magazine, Hamilton Cue Magazine, the Downtown Hamilton Promenade Review, Reader’s Digest and the 50th Anniversary publication for Local 1005. This series also consists of a business card belonging to Jimmy Lomax.
