Mountain Inclines

This series depicts postcards with images of the various Hamilton inclines, including the historic East end incline and James Street Inclines.

Churches

This series contains postcards with images of the various church buildings found in Hamilton. Examples include the Centenary Church and St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Non-Postcard Materials

This series contains non-postcard material donated alongside the postcard collection. Such material includes commemorative items such as the Centennial coin, as well as historical ephemera such as bus tickets issued by Canada SS. Lines Ltd.

This collection principally consists of early to mid-20th century postcards collected by Michael Johnstone depicting Hamilton, Hamilton citizens, and the Hamiltonian lifestyle at the time. Examples include: King street landscapes, Ellen Fairclough, Gage Park, the City Hospital, and New City Hall. Furthermore, collection contains non-postcard ephemera from the early 20th century such as photographs, Stereoscopic prints, an insurance policy, and a commemorative centennial coin.

Parks and landscapes

This series includes postcards depicting the natural imagery of Hamilton and of Hamilton’s parks and gardens. Such examples include The Hamilton Rock Garden, and the Hamilton beachfront.

Buildings

This series contains postcards depicting prominent Hamiltonian buildings through the 20th Century. They range from buildings as old as the Bank of British North America building, to New City Hall.
