Series consists of photographs of Jimmy Lomax, his wife Susan and his son, Ryan, as well as various individuals and events pertaining to the fundraising of his Operation Santa Claus project. This series begins with some historical photographs of hospital visits undertaken by previous individuals who played Santa Claus from the 1930s to the 1950s. This series on photographs also includes a few images of Harold Alkerton who was Jimmy Lomax’s Santa when Lomax was sick in the hospital as a child. Alkerton was the person who inspired Jimmy to play the role of Santa himself to other unfortunate children and adults. The photographs in this series also highlight the beginning of Lomax’s role as Santa Claus, Lomax family members, the Lomax family trip to Disney World, which they were awarded by the Hamilton business community, Santa visits to families, organizations and institutions, Operation Santa Claus fundraisers such as garage sales, picnics, toy rides, among others, as well as work parties, Jimmy Lomax on parade, the Santa Van and photographs of his awards and recognition. This series also includes a file of photographs with little archival context and unidentified individuals.

Series consists of the research materials of Dr. Freda F. Waldon, Chief Librarian of the Hamilton Public Library. Dr. Waldon and members of the library board were interested in researching the history of early libraries in Hamilton, and in particular, the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute. They noticed there was a gap in the knowledge of the early libraries that existed before the establishment of the Hamilton Public Library in 1889. The series consists of Dr. Waldon’s correspondence to and from various individuals requesting assistance with her research. Her letter correspondence includes asking certain individuals about their recollections of the Mechanics’ Institute, including a plea to the editor of the Hamilton Spectator, to publish her request in the paper so that members of the community could provide information from their own personal experience, or as descendants of the original members of the Mechanics’ Institute. She was particularly interested in where the Institute was located, the reasons for the demise of the organization and what existed between the end of the Mechanics’ Institute and the establishment of the government-funded public library system. The series also contains Dr. Waldon’s handwritten and typewritten research notes about the history of the Mechanics’ Institute and early libraries. The series also consists of some of her published research including a letter she wrote that was printed in the Ontario Library Review entitled, “From Mechanics’ Institute to Cultural Centre,” dated Febrary, 1949, as well as an address she gave to the Head-of-the-Lake Historical Society, October 11, 1946 entitled, “Early Provision for Libraries in Hamilton.” The speech was later published in the Wentworth Bygones, From the Papers and Records of the Head-of-the-Lake Historical Society, Issue No. 4, 1963.

Subseries consists of land ownership materials, including land grants and deeds, records documenting the transfer of land ownership, such as an indenture between George Hamilton and David Farley regarding land in Hamilton, and land grants for the Township of Harvey. Subseries also contains a memorial deed of partition, leases, a petition for a claim on land lots, a certificate of a land survey, notices for sale of properties, receipts for payment of taxes and rents, acknowledgements for receipts of land and money, as well as correspondence and lot surveys concerning the town of Preston, Ontario.

Series consists of certificates and letters of recognition and congratulations from prominent politicians for receiving various awards such as the Order of Canada, the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, the Outstanding Hamiltonian of the Year award, as well as his 50th anniversary of Operation Santa Claus. Dignitaries sending their congratulations include the Right Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Governor General Michaelle Jean, former and current mayors of Hamilton, city councilors, and a few Members of Parliament from various political parties. The series also consists of invitations to awards nights, a Hamilton Tiger-Cat Football Club Touchline Pass ticket no.1 with Jimmy Lomax’s name on it, programs for awards nights, as well as plaques.

Series consists of records pertaining to business transactions, including mortgage documents, release of trusts and trustees, promissory notes, investment statements, cash statements, receipts and an agreement regarding apprenticeship.

Series consists of letters of appreciation from various organizations, agencies and individuals such as hospitals, nursing homes, shelters and grateful parents, for Jimmy Lomax’s Santa visits and his distribution of toys and items from Operation Santa Claus, letters of donation, Christmas and thank you cards, as well as letters to Santa. Many of the letters mention and appreciate Jimmy’s kindness and generosity towards the less fortunate in society. Some of the cards and letters were also addressed to the Lomax family, including his wife Susan, and his son Ryan, for their part in Operation Santa Claus role-playing as Mrs. Claus and Santa Junior.

Series consists of an advertisement for a Mechanics’ Ball to take place January 17, 1845 from the members of the Managing Committee of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute. There is also an announcement of lectures dated November 1848, that lists the dates and topics of each lecture, as well as the designated speaker. The topics include, but are not limited to, Mechanics’ Institutes, the influence of art and science on the wealth and character of the nation, longevity, the natural history of man, ornamental gardening, social economics, and the best way to supply towns with water. The lectures were held in the evenings at 7:30pm in the reading rooms and hall of the Institute. Members and their families were admitted free of charge, admission was charged for non-members and ladies were free.

The material in the fonds consists of four volumes of administrative records pertaining to the Hamilton Branch of the Soldiers' Aid Commission. Two of the volumes are attendance books, including an undated book listing all the soldiers who attended dinners hosted by the Soldiers Aid Commission upon returning from overseas, as well as a meeting attendance book. There are also two volumes of meeting minutes for the Ontario Minutes Soldiers' Aid Commission, Hamilton Branch, dated December 1916 to October 1921, and November 1921 to November 1928.

Series consists of correspondence to and from various individuals including a letter written by Angus McAfee and his brother-in-law George Hughson, to his wife and George’s sister, Thamen, dated July 2, 1812 in Niagara, Ontario, informing her that he is well and giving his prediction that a truce is imminent, a letter written by Samuel McAfee to his brother Angus letting him know he is well and updating him on a skirmish he was involved in with the Americans, dated at Queenston, May 26, 1813, a letter [copy of orders] to Angus McAfee from Brigadier General John Vincent, dated June 10, 1813, correspondence from Angus McAfee to the Colonels and other officers of the late 5th Lincoln and 2nd York Militia, making a claim for payment of which he feels he did not receive for some of his military service, dated October 14, 1818, and a letter of response from N. Coffin of the Adjutant Office, to Angus, dated May 3, 1819. The series also consists of some military correspondence from a later time period pertaining to a Lieutenant John A. Nelles, including General Orders written to Lieutenant Nelles of the 1st Haldimand Regiment Militia, Nelles Settlement, Grand River, dated May 24, 1830, ordering him to report to a muster call and prepare the militia companies for training, as well as an invitation from Lieutenant-Colonel Davis and Officers of the 37th, to Lieutenant Nelles, requesting his company at a dinner held at the Battalion Shed, dated October 10, 1867. There is also some general correspondence from the Hamilton Spectator to Justus A. Griffin (President of the Wentworth Historical Society), with an enclosure from Nathaniel Hughson McAfee, dated February 5, 1903, mentioning that the subscriber to their newspaper asked to have documents forwarded to the president of the Wentworth Historical Society, and requesting the president to contact him, dated February 6, 1903. The letter from Nathaniel Hughson McAfee is a short note mentioning he has in his possession some historical papers pertaining to his family and their service in the War of 1812. He also mentions his family were United Empire Loyalists and that he has connections to other Loyalists such as his grandfather, Nathaniel Hughson and his grandmother, Colonel Land’s sister. The final piece of correspondence in the series is a longer letter from Nathaniel Hughson McAfee to Justus A. Griffin, providing the details of the papers he was donating along with more information about his family and their service in the War of 1812. Nathaniel’s father was Sergeant Angus McAfee and Daniel and Samuel were his uncles.

Series consists of three undated militia muster rolls including one for Captain Hatt’s Company of Volunteers of the 5th Lincoln and 2nd York Militia, which lists the names of the soldiers including Daniel McAfee and Sergeant Angus McAfee, a muster roll of Captain James Durand’s 2nd Flank Company of the 5th Lincoln Militia, which also lists Sergeant Angus McAfee and Daniel McAfee, and a roll call of Captain Andrew Kerby’s Company. There is also a partial pay list of the 5th Lincoln Militia dated December 25, 1812 to May 24, 1813, for Sergeants Angus McAfee and George Hughson, Regimental Orders from Fort Detroit dating from 1809, a Military Return for Lieutenant Robert Young’s Company, First Haldimand Militia dated June 4, 1841, detailing the number of men present on parade, absent with leave, absent without leave, and absent due to sickness, as well as a travel authorization pass for Angus McAfee, given at the police office in Montreal, Quebec, dated February 4, 1814.

There are also newspaper clippings containing articles on a Hamilton Spectator series called “Out of the Storied Past,” written by Society member Mabel Burkholder. Iron screw (propeller) freight steamer measuring 180 x 31 x 13 feet, 798 tonnage, built in Hamilton, Ontario in1892 by John Balmer Fairgrieve and Hugh Fairgrieve. The Arabian was built using a steam engine salvaged from the S.S. Canada and repurposed for the new vessel. The Arabian plied the waters along the Montreal to Lake Ontario route as a package freighter until it was removed from service and cut down for use as a barge in 1935. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, registration and ownership documents and transfers, memorandums, legal documents, correspondence from the Department of Marine and Fisheries, the Montreal Transportation Company Limited, the Canadian Import Company Limited, and the St. Lawrence Stevedoring Company Limited, to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, as well as telegrams, a bill of sale and a collision report.

Screw (propeller) steamer yacht measuring 50 x 10 x 5 feet, 20 tonnage, built in Hamilton, Ontario in 1892 by William Robertson for Miss Alice May Petrie. The voyage history of this ship is unknown. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, registration and ownership documents and transfers, legal correspondence to and from the Registrar of Shipping and the Department of Transport, Marine Services, regarding bills of sale and ownership papers, as well as legal documentation regarding the estate of Alice May Petrie.

Screw (propeller) yacht measuring 41 x 9 ½ x 5 feet, built in Hamilton, Ontario in 1899 by James Weir. The voyage history of the vessel is unknown. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, a declaration of ownership, a memorandum regarding the receipt of documentation, as well as some correspondence regarding the existence of the ship and its whereabouts.

Twin screw (propeller) turbine-engine steamer measuring 250 x 33.2 x 12.6 feet, 1,064 tonnage, built in 1904 in Hebburn-on-Tyne, England by R.W. Hawthorn, Leslie & Company. The ship was built as a passenger ferry service between Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario. The ship could accommodate 2000 passengers and was the most luxurious and fastest pleasure steamer to ply the waters of the lower great lakes. The vessel was used overseas during the First World War and returned to the waters of Western Lake Ontario in 1924. By 1927, its days as a Hamilton area cruise ship came to an end as fewer people travelled by boat or took pleasure cruises. It was then sold and used for service between Montreal and Sorel, Quebec. The file contains a surveyor’s report on crew space, a builder’s certificate, receipts, memorandums, mortgage documents, registration and ownership documents, legal correspondence, as well as correspondence from the Turbine Steamship Company, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, Canada Steamship Lines Limited, the Department of Transport, and Marine Industries Limited, to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Twin screw (propeller) steel steamer built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1888 by William Hamilton & Company. The boat was brought over and used as a pleasure cruise carrying about 114 passengers between Hamilton and Burlington, as well as Hamilton and Toronto. In 1928, the vessel was sold and became known as the Manasoo, and was used as a passenger ship in the Georgian Bay area where it sank shortly afterwards. The file contains registration and ownership documents, a certificate of marking verifying the seaworthiness of the vessel, a mortgage certificate, a transfer of registry, receipts and memorandums, as well as correspondence to and from the Canada Customs Collector’s Office, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, the Hamilton Steamboat Company, the Collingwood Shipbuilding Company Limited, the Owen Sound Transportation Company and the Canada Steamship Lines Limited, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

The file contains registration records and ownership certificates, a surveyor’s certificate, several declarations of joint owners, a steamboat inspector’s certificate, a few bills of sale, a wreck report, memorandums, receipts and telegraphs, as well as correspondence from Customs Canada, Collector’s Office, the National Revenue, Customs and Excise Division, the Department of Transport, Marine Services, legal correspondence, and correspondence from various individuals, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Twin-screw motor pleasure yacht measuring 60 x 12 x 6 feet, 24 tonnage, built in Hamilton, Ontario in 1921 by John and William Robertson and William Burnside. There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, registration documents, a surveyor’s report on crew space, as well as correspondence from the Department of Marine and Fisheries, J.H. Thomas, Surveyor of Shipping, Charles, H.O. Pook, owner of the vessel, and the Canadian Westinghouse Company Limited, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, regarding the existence and whereabouts of the vessel.

Luella collided with the Rosedale and caused her to sink, with the loss of most of the ship’s papers and documentation. The file contains mortgage papers, a collision report, a transcript of register for transmission to Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen, as well as correspondence from Customs Canada, the Department of Marine and Fisheries and the Inland Navigation Company Limited, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains ownership documents, a bill of sale, legal correspondence, a probate will for William Eli Sandford, as well as correspondence from Customs Canada, Collector’s Office, and the Department of Transport, Marine Services, to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

The ship carried cargo such as grain, rails and ore. The file contains a certificate of British Registry, a transcript of register for transmission to Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario, as well as correspondence from the Inland Navigation Company Limited, and the Customs House, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario.

Twin screw (propeller) steamer measuring 67 x 15 x 5 feet, 66 tonnage, built in Grandes-Piles, Quebec in 1903 by William Ritchie. The vessel was bought by the Hamilton Ferry Company and used for ferry service around Hamilton. The vessel was dismantled in 1924. The file contains ownership documentation, a bill of sale, a certificate of inspection, legal documentation as well as correspondence from the Department of Marine and Fisheries Canada, the Department of Transport, and the Hamilton Ferry Company, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Series consists of a letter dated February 15, 1943, written by R.C.A.F. member, George [Freer?], who was stationed in Mont-Joli, Quebec while taking an air gunner course. He wrote to the canteen personnel to let them know he would soon be coming to Hamilton on leave (furlough). His letter expresses his hope that he will meet and get acquainted with a local Hamilton girl. George describes his physical characteristics and includes a photograph, which he hopes canteen staff will show to some of the girls, who would be willing to write to him before he arrives. The photograph is an image of George and his sister and the writing on the reverse side says, “My sister and I, taken in Hamilton this Christmas. Sorry I didn’t have one of myself alone.” The series also consists of a Canadian Pacific Telegram written to Mrs. W. A. Gilmour, one of the Board of Directors of the Canteen, suggesting prices for sandwiches, cokes and meat pies to sell at the canteen, dated August 18, 1941, a letter of recognition and appreciation to canteen volunteers from Olga Wigle, Chairman of the Women’s Division Canteen Committee, thanking them for a job well done at the end of their first year running the canteen, and for making it a success, dated April 27, 1942, as well as an undated and unsigned letter from the individual who submitted the first annual report on the canteen coffee shop, which mentions the success of the canteen. There are also two invitations, one for an upcoming Annual Meeting held February 21, 1945, and one for a buffet supper held at the canteen on November 16 [year unknown], as well as one appreciation card dated November 16, 1945, from the Directors and Executives of the Active Service Canteen, to Miss Agnes Hay, for her assistance in maintaining the happiness and morale of the men serving in the military.

Series consists of meeting minutes for the Active Service Canteen from May 2, 1941 to November 8, 1944. The minutes include items such as nominations of officers, establishment of rules and regulations for the canteen, the patrons, and the volunteers, a volunteer application form, rules and procedures for volunteer duties, schedules and attire, the creation of various committees such as the entertainment committee, the purchasing committee, the magazine committee and the visiting committee, the daily operations of the canteen, issues arising from volunteers or patrons, canteen finances, food and beverage pricing and menu items, as well as equipment inventories and repairs. This series also consists of two canteen administration logbooks. The first one is dated January 26, 1943 to March 19, 1945, and records instructions, suggestions, criticisms, complaints, item breakages, as well as any essential equipment repairs and replacement. The members were asked to enter their comments, sign and date the entry. One of the entries includes a comment about stretching butter with cream due to the rationing of certain foods during the war. There is also a newspaper clipping pasted into the book with positive feedback about the canteen from a navy sailor stationed in Hamilton. The second canteen logbook dates from 1941 to 1945 and has sections divided by letter tabs, which record the administrative operations of the canteen mostly by subject alphabetically, rather than by chronological date. Subjects include, but are not limited to, committees, donations, equipment, meetings, purchases, suggestions, supplies, transportation and volunteers. The book has a number of loose-leaf pages throughout, but also a number added at the end of the volume, including a few newspaper clippings about the canteen.

Subseries consists of records for public organizations, including the Business Advisory Centre of Hamilton-Wentworth, Hamilton Civic Hospital, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, the Henderson Hospital Research Centre, Oakville Galleries and Opera Hamilton. The material consists of photographs, negatives, contact sheets, an annual report and a faxed memo.

The Club was awarded this honour for their publication Naturally, Hamilton!, which encourages people to think of Hamilton as a place to visit for its natural areas and wildlife viewing opportunities. There is also letter correspondence congratulating the Club on receiving the Federation of Ontario Naturalists’ Award (June 26, 2001), as well as some biographical information on volunteer Hazel Broker for Volunteer Corner. The file contains three photographs pertaining to the award recognition.

Subseries consists of records of the Junior Audubon Club, which was a club for children interested in nature and wildlife preservation. The material includes a record book consisting of the lists of schools and teachers involved in the Club, meeting minutes and bird club statistical records. In 1986, this club partnered with the Royal Botanical Gardens to form the Hamilton Junior Naturalists’ Club to instill in children a life-long appreciation and respect for the environment and the natural world. This subserie also includes photographs from the Junior Club program Worm Watch that took place at the Royal Botanical Gardens Nature Centre in 2000.

The third scrapbook contains information on the sanctuaries held by the Club, and photographs of the Spooky Hollow and Short Hills Wilderness Sanctuaries. The fourth scrapbook contains mostly newspaper articles of press coverage on the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club.

File consists of images of the "Kitchen of Tomorrow" Eaton's display for Hobbs Glass Limited, which was located at 51-53 John Street South.

In the 1980s, it was discovered that some of the negatives in the Superior Engravers collection were nitrate. Series consists of prints made from nitrate negatives prior to their destruction. Images in this series depict industry in Hamilton and elsewhere in Ontario during the 1930s-1950s. Companies documented in the series include Wright Fruit Company; Hamilton Pure Milk Dairies; Crawford Cartage; Meaks and Sons Limited; Life Savers & Beech-Nut Sale Company Limited; McLaren Motor Sales; General Motors of Canada; Goodale Transport Limited; Lloyd's Glass Co.; and Shoe Clinic Ltd. Series includes images of equipment, vehicles and buildings; products and displays and showrooms; and office interiors.

File consists of photographs of Wright Fruit Company, established in April 1927 by chief shareholders, Solomon Wright and Percy Wright. Wright Fruit Company carried on a wholesale and commission business originally from 25 York Street, with other facilities at 77 MacNab Street North and 31 York Street in Hamilton. Facilities included climate-controlled ripening rooms for items such as tomatoes that arrived green and took up to two weeks to ripen enough for sale.

File consists of photographs of horses and carts from The Pure Milk Company, established in 1901 with John Milne, a manufacturer and politician, as president. Prior to the advent of Pure Milk Company, various small operators handled the distribution of dairy products in Hamilton. Milne and other businessmen played on public fears of contaminated milk to ensure support for Pure Milk, which had the capital to acquire the latest machinery and technology for sterile processing.

File consists of photographs of product displays from Meakins & Sons Ltd., 125 Wellington Street North, Hamilton.

File consists of photographs of vehicles from Life Savers & Beech-Nut Sale Company Limited, located at 225 Sanford Ave S. Life Savers Limited first operated in Canada at Prescott, Ontario, in 1916. In 1932, Life Savers bought out the Beech-Nut company of Canada, and the two companies amalgamated and began production in Hamilton in 1932. The original factory was at the corner of Cumberland and Sanford Avenue. A new building was erected in 1951 and was the only Life Savers plant in Canada, which produced millions of boxes of candy annually. In 2004, after more than 80 years of candy-making history in Hamilton, production of the candy ended.

File consists of a photograph of showroom windows for General Motors Products of Canada, 68-72 John Street North, which are painted with signs for Oldsmobile automobiles, and photographs the interior of the General Motors building situated at George and Bay Streets, which was completely renovated in 1936 with a two-story addition that ran 138 feet along George Street. Seven houses were demolished to make room for the new L-shaped structure. Shortly after this renovation, the business changed its name to Hamilton Motor Products.
