Lovely Old Home

Caption: "Lovely Old Home - This is the Ball homestead, at Ball's Falls, on the escarpment just south of Jordan. It is now owned and occupied by C. M. Ball. A company of British soldiers was stationed at Ball's Falls during the War of 1812 to protect the near-by mill which was supplying flour for the troops."

St. Ann's Cemetery

Caption: "St. Ann's Pioneers Rest Here - Burials in the historic old St. Ann's Cemetery date back to 1797, perhaps even earlier than that. One little monument bears this inscription: "In memory of Ann, daughter of John and Charity Kennedy, who died February 10, 1797, aged six years, 11 months, and 10 days." A column marks the burial place of the Rev. D. W. Eastman, father of the Presbyterian Church in the Niagara and Gore districts, who died in 1865 at the age of 87 years."

G.V. Clancy Limited

File consists of photographs of vehicles and facilities of G. V. Clancy Limited, a broom manufacturing company, which was operated by George V. Clancy and located at 18 Haymarket Street, just south of Beckley Street off John Street South. The manufacturing company at this location appears as Walter Woods Ltd. in the city directory for 1943, after which point it appears under the Clancy name from 1944-1950.

Russell T. Kelley Limited

File consists of photographs of employees at Russell T. Kelley Limited, an advertising agency named after the agency's founder, Russell T. Kelley, who opened the first office at Main and MacNab in 1913. The company later moved to Main Street, and then to the stone building at Main and Walnut Streets, the former home of Col. Dr. George Rennie, Hamilton's chief coroner.

Goodale Transport Limited

File consists of photographs of staff and vehicles from Goodale Transport. Once located at 72 Napier Street and under the administration of president Edward Goodale, Goodale Transport originated with one truck in 1921 when Arthur Edward Goodale drove the single truck himself and undertook city delivery work. By July 1922, a second truck was added and by the fall of that year, out-of-town transporting began. Goodale Transport was incorporated in 1928 and, as business thrived, Edward Goodale became active in the Automotive Transport Association of Ontario. By 1936, Goodale Transport offered daily service between some eighty-two points using thirty motor units and nine trailers and, in addition to the head office in Hamilton, had branches in Brantford, Galt, Guelph, Kitchener, Woodstock, Toronto, London, Niagara Falls, Stratford, St. Catharines and Welland. The company had forty-nine employees, forty-seven men and two women. On March 1, 1936, Goodale Transport Limited moved into their new headquarters in the Northside Storage Building at Bay and Mulberry Streets.

Item is a photograph of part of the office of Canadian Acceptance Corporation Ltd., located in Suite #419 in the Terminal Building at 128 King Street East in Hamilton. Canadian Acceptance Corporation Ltd. dealt in automobile and industrial financing. They first appear in the city directory at this address in 1941. They last appear at this address in 1953.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, including a scrapbook with excerpts from The Wood Duck (1961-1965, and 1998), the journal of the Hamilton Naturalists' Club, documenting the formation of the Bruce Trail Association and the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club. One scrapbook also contains brochures and unused Iroquoia Bruce Trail Letterhead.

The subfonds consists of records documenting the activities of the Municipal Chapter of the IODE, arranged in the following series: minute books; annual meeting minutes and reports; treasurer's book and reports; special committee reports; membership applications and other material; attendance records; war service records; photographs; scrapbooks; maps; books and pamphlets; correspondence; financial records; periodicals; awards and ephemera; and chapter histories.

Minute books

Series consists of minute books for meetings of the Municipal Chapter, including subseries for house committee and property committee meetings, as well as a subseries for the Khaki Club, which documents the Municipal Chapter's contributions to the Khaki Club. Minute books are arranged by type of meeting, then chronologically by date of meeting.

War Service records

Series consists of a record of war services rendered and directed by the Hamilton Municipal Chapter, and other IODE war service records, including correspondence and honour rolls, as well as forms pertaining to the war charities act of 1917.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, which contain newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, invitations and other material pertaining to the activities of the Municipal Chapter. The scrapbook for 1901-1996 includes a photograph of Fonthill (168 Jackson St. W.) and information about the opening of the new headquarters (1938); photographs from a reception in 1957 for Ellen Fairclough, the first female Canadian Cabinet Minister; and a report about IODE founder Margaret Polson (Mrs. Clark Murray). The scrapbook for 2007-2012 includes photographs from annual meetings.

Chapter histories

Series consists of two chapter histories. One book is a municipal chapter history, which contains by-laws (1985) for the chapter, the names of life members, the names of Hamilton IODE chapters with the dates each organized and disbanded, as well as the names of executive members present at annual meetings, including officers and conveners, stewards and house committee chairmen. The other book contains histories for Hamilton IODE chapters. The book contains a 50-year history for the Municipal Chapter, the St. Hilda Chapter, the St. Elizabeth Chapter, the St. Cecilia Chapter, the Caxton Chapter, the Paardeburg Chapter, the General Allenby Chapter, and the 67th University Battery Chapter. Some of the histories include an addendum that documents the next 10 years of the chapter, resuming from the point at which the 50-year history concluded.

War Service records

Series consists of an honour roll, a commemorative volume containing information about relatives of members of the Betram Hooper/ Wentworth Chapter who served in the Canadian military. Records include the following information about military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, where and when they volunteered, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those included in the volume were born between 1903-1923. Records are arranged in alphabetical order according to the individual's last name.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks containing textual records and photographs pertaining to the activities of the 67th University Battery Chapter. The scrapbook for 1975 includes articles that pertain to the activities of other chapters as well.

Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Chapter records

Subfonds consists of minute books for meetings of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Chapter as well as a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, correspondence, thank you cards and photographs pertaining to the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire.

George Webb fonds

Series consists of one Holy Bible, which contains details about the Van Sickle family of Lynden; and two pocket-sized prayer books, containing select readings from the BIble.

Diairies

Series contains 32 personal diaries: one dated 1888-1892, and one for each year from 1912 to 1942. The diaries detail Webb's daily life, and contain both personal and work-related information. Some diaries include newspaper clippings, such as obituaries, as well as lists of expenditures.

The collection consists primarily of political cartoons drawn by Graeme MacKay for The Hamilton Spectator. Topics covered in the cartoons are wide-ranging, and involve many political issues facing Canada, Ontario and the city of Hamilton. All of the drawings are “working originals” with a few partial sketches that may be missing captions or have blank areas.

Wesleyan Ladies' College fonds

Fonds consists of textual records including written correspondence, graduation and commencement programs, examination questions and essays, diplomas, course catalogues, periodicals, as well as Alumnae Association records, such as annual reports and Literary Club programs. Papers about the college

Series consists of documentation pertaining to the history of Wesleyan Ladies' College, including a paper by Louise M. Griffith, whose father, W.P. Wright, taught at Wesleyan, a paper and handwritten notes by Freda F. Waldon, and the act to incorporate the college (1861).

Dr. William Colgate

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Dr. Colgate, of Toronto, regarding the history of the college. A clipping with an illustration of the Wesleyan Female College from the Canadian Illustrated News (1863) is included.

Mamie L. Cunningham

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Mamie L. Cunningham, of Toronto, regarding her grandfather, Dr. Rice, principal of Wesleyan for many years, and Cunnigham's mother, Sarah Elizabeth Starr Rice, who graduated with an M.L.A. degree from Wesleyan in 1864 and was principal of the school from 1868-1873, and regarding Mrs. Griffith and some of the other pupils.

Graduation and commencement programs

Series contains graduation and commencement programs for Wesleyan Ladies College, arranged chronologically into files for closing exercises, graduation exercises and commencement exercises.

Rose and Annie Barker files

Series contains documentation of the lives of sisters Rose Barker (1867-1944) and Annie Barker and of their time at Wesleyan Ladies' College. Rose received her degree in 1893, and Annie received a certificate in music that same year. Series is comprised of the funeral address of Rose Hannah Barker, lesson notes, examination questions and essays, a certificate from the Temperance Society, and accounts, which consists of handwritten records of payment.

Alumnae Association files

Series contains materials related to the Alumnae Association, including constitution, bylaws, and rules of order (1877) ; annual reports ; lectures and programs ; invitations to at-homes, levees and receptions ; Literary Club materials ; Membership materials ; Mrs. Ewing's cooking school programs ; badges, diplomas and awards (including copies of a diploma awarded to Hester Ann Rogers Horner in 1958, prior to incorporation, as well as original diplomas awarded to Matilda Meharry in 1871 and Lillie Hardy in 1887) ; as well as a manuscript book, which contains lists of music pupils and concert programs.

Book Manuscripts

Series consists of two original draft manuscripts written by Thomas McIlwraith. The first manuscript is for the "Birds of Ontario" [n.d.], which is a concise account of every species of bird known to have been found in Ontario, along with a description of the nests and eggs. The second manuscript is the "Birds Observed in the Vicinity of Hamilton" [1860].

History of the Tower Poetry Society

Series consists of written histories of the Society, including a piece on the founder Ida Sutherland Groom, and an essay by Canadian author Peter Bowman.

Publicity

Series consists of scrapbooks containing articles related to the Society or its members, as well as articles on various historical landmarks, people, companies, properties and events. There are also newspaper clippings containing articles on a Hamilton Spectator series called “Out of the Storied Past,” written by Society member Mabel Burkholder. This series also contains 6 video cassette tapes of television coverage of Society events and interviews regarding historical subjects related to the history of Hamilton.

Administrative

Series consists of printed annual reports, which includes President’s reports and financial reports, a list of the Board of Directors, and minutes and agendas for Opera Hamilton meetings.

Hamilton Opera Guild

Series consists of correspondence, list of guild members, invitations, and a calendar of events. Guild members included industry professionals and any individuals who sought to represent and support the professional work of opera singers and musicians.

Opera Productions

Series consists of correspondence between Opera Hamilton and potential visiting artists, as well as Boris Brott, performance feedback forms, notes of thanks, an overview of Opera Hamilton’ productions, program addendums from sponsors, typed reviews of performances, show tickets and a study guide. The series also includes Season Guides and Show Programs dating from 1979-2012. Series also consists of video recording of live broadcasts of Opera Hamilton performances on CHCH channel 11, as well as audio recording of performances and rehearsals.

Governance

Series consists of lists of the Board of Governors, by-laws, the organization’s constitution and organizational structure. The series also contains a book of by-laws and lists of stock holders.

Administrative Records

Series consists of records pertaining to job applications and job descriptions, mailing lists, member lists, standard procedures and surveys. Series also consists of correspondence related to nomination and resignations, resolutions and legal arbitration. Administrative Records also contains reports, contracts, and papers regarding RHCM’s incorporation and royal proclamation. It also consists of a royal proclamation certificate in a gold, ornate frame.

Publicity

Series consists of news clippings related to the Hamilton Opera Company and promotional materials for the company’s productions.
