The fonds consists of records of the Hamilton Opera Company, and includes the following four series: Administrative records, correspondence, production and publicity.

Financial records

Series consists of business transaction records for Hamilton chapters of the IODE, including a bank book, cheques and receipts, as well as records documenting donations made to the Jamaica Earthquake Relief Fund.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, which include photographs, newspaper clippings and other material, documenting the activities of the St. Elizabeth Chapter and highlighting important events, such as the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the chapter.

War Service records

Series consists of an honour roll, commemorative volume containing information about relatives of members of the St. Elizabeth Chapter who served in the Canadian military during Word War I (1914-1918). Records include the following information about military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, where and when they volunteered, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those included in the volume were born between 1880-1899. Photographs accompany the records of 14 of the 25 individuals named in the volume.

Minute books

Series consists of minute books for meetings of the Paardeburg Chapter, containing information about the activities of the chapter, including photographs of an event at Civic Stadium, paperwork documenting the ceremonial presentation of the colours of the South African Boer War Veterans to the Paardeburg Chapter, and legal paperwork pertaining to the establishment of a bursary at McMaster University.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, which contain photographs, letters, newspaper clippings and other material, documenting the activities of the Paardeburg Chapter. Series includes a scrapbook containing information about parcels sent by the chapter to Hamilton soldiers overseas; a scrapbook dedicated to the history of the chapter; and scrapbooks documenting chapter anniversaries and activities, including a scrapbook from the Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin Chapter dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Paardeburg Chapter.

Series consists of a scrapbook of photographs and newspaper clippings that document the activities of the Right Honourable Stanley Baldwin Chapter of the IODE. The scrapbook was presented to the Stanley Baldwin Chapter by the Paardeburg Chapter as a memento of their 35th anniversary on February 13th, 1973.

Annual meeting minutes and reports

Series consists of meeting minutes and reports, including secretary's reports and financial reports, for annual meetings of the Municipal Chapter. Series contains an annual meeting book with attestations and signatures of chapter members for 1907-1919, annual meeting books with handwritten minutes and reports for 1938-1985, as well as minutes and reports for 1953-1955, 1973 and 1983-2003.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs of annual meetings of the Municipal Chapter, the 100th Anniversary Luncheon, annual meetings of the Toronto Municipal Chapter and the Provincial Chapter of Ontario, photographs of various Holbrook Public School outings supported by IODE funding, photographs of Fonthill, including pictures of the interior and exterior of the house, and photographs of Native Sena Memorial Elementary School, Weagamow Lake. Photographs have been removed from albums for preservation purposes. Textual records, such as clippings, letters, newsletters and notes from events accompany some of the photographs. Series also contains photographs, which were not contained in albums, documenting volunteer work and various chapter activities, as well as a reception held for Ellen Fairclough.

Books and pamphlets

Series consists a bible, and various books and pamphlets, including informational pamphlets about flag anniversaries and commemorative flag-raising; souvenir and commemorative pamphlets; a catalogue of photograph and painting reproductions offered by the IODE to schools for educational use; meeting minutes for annual national meetings, and a record of post-graduate scholarship holders for 1920-1940.

Hamilton-McMaster LGBTQ+ Groups

The Hamilton-McMaster Gay Liberation Movement, the first gay liberation group in Hamilton, was founded by Dr. John Stewart and Susan Rosenthal after a lecture on homosexuality by George Hislop of the Community Homophile Association (CHAT) in November 1972. It was officially established with its first executive committee on January 1973. They changed their name to McMaster Homophile Association (MHA) on January 1976 and was active until 1979 under the name Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association. The Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association was a member of the National Gay Rights Coalition (NGRC), an organization of gay associations across Canada who challenged federal government laws regarding homosexuality. They were also a member of the Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario (later known as Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario, CLGRO), an organization of lesbian and gay groups and individuals focused in Ontario. They hosted dances, educational programs, established Hamilton’s first Gayline, and produced the Dialogue newsletters. The Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association was also politically active and submitted briefs to the Ontario Human Rights Commission to include sexual orientation within the Ontario Human Rights Code.

The Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Association of McMaster (formerly Gay and Lesbian Association at McMaster) was a social and support network for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals that began in 1986 and received support from the Hamilton United Gay Societies (HUGS). They had weekly support groups, social groups, peer counselling, educational presentations, a radio show on CFMU 93.3 FM, and a column on The Silhouette. GLBAM was a member of CLGRO and the Coalition of Lesbians and Gays on Campus (CLGC).

Series consists of administrative records such as constitutions and by-laws, financial statements, correspondence, newspaper clippings, the Dialogue newsletters from the Hamilton-McMaster Gay Liberation Movement, The 10% newsletters from the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Association of McMaster (GLBAM), The Phoenix and 10% newsletters, and The Silhouette newspaper clippings.

Hamilton Gay and Lesbian Alliance (HGALA)

On February 1991, the Hamilton United Gay Societies (HUGS) transitioned to the Hamilton Gay and Lesbian Alliance (Hamilton GALA or HGALA). HGALA continued to provide services and information to the LGBTQ+ community and the broader community in Hamilton. The suborganizations under HGALA were the Lesbian/Gayline, Dance Committee Volunteers, Support Group, Youth Group, Hamilton Lesbian Collective (HLC), Lesbian Support Group, Speakers Bureau, Phoenix Newsletter, Hamilton-Wentworth Gay Archives and the Hamilton GALA Computer Bulletin Board.

Series consists of constitutions, membership files, meeting minutes, balance sheets, correspondence, notes, memorandum, files related to Festival ’91, pamphlets, reports, newspaper clippings, flyers, petitions, and the Joe Oliver v. The Corporation of the City of Hamiton and Mayor Robert Morrow case files.

Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (CLGRO)

The Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (formerly Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario) was established on January 18 and 19, 1975. CLGRO was a non-profit organization of groups and individuals committed to working towards feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual liberation by engaging in public struggle for full human rights, in promoting diversity and access within our communities and by strengthening cooperative networks for feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual activism. After 34 years, they dissolved on May 2nd, 2009. Today, Queer Ontario continues the work of CLGRO and preserves their history and documents.

Series consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, reports, publication, briefs to the Members of the Ontario Legislature and their newsletters.
