The Hamilton Poetry Centre was established in 1983 as a not-for-profit, volunteer run organization in Hamilton, Ontario, for the purpose of promoting and furthering the appreciation of poetry writing in the city. The Centre conducts poetry writing workshops and hosts Canada Council-sponsored poetry and author readings within the community.

The material in the fonds consists of predominantly textual documents covering the daily operation and activities of the Hamilton Poetry Centre during the 1980s and 1990s. The fonds also consists of audio cassette tapes of recordings of poetry and author readings, as well as photographs.

An accrual of material was processed into the fonds in October 2023. The material from the accrual consists of various textual materials, including publicity for poetry readings and workshops, meeting minutes, copies of Iambus, the Hamilton Poetry Centre newsletter, publicity for the P.E.N. (Poets, Essayists and Novelists) fundraiser event, as well as a few newspaper clippings regarding the eighteenth-century Scottish poet, Robert Burns.
General note
The material donated by the Hamilton Poetry Centre included 94 books and poetry publications, but these items were pulled from this fonds and integrated into the Local History & Archives book collection.
