The first manuscript is for the "Birds of Ontario" [n.d.], which is a concise account of every species of bird known to have been found in Ontario, along with a description of the nests and eggs. Series consists of letters of appreciation from various organizations, agencies and individuals such as hospitals, nursing homes, shelters and grateful parents, for Jimmy Lomax’s Santa visits and his distribution of toys and items from Operation Santa Claus, letters of donation, Christmas and thank you cards, as well as letters to Santa. Many of the letters mention and appreciate Jimmy’s kindness and generosity towards the less fortunate in society. Some of the cards and letters were also addressed to the Lomax family, including his wife Susan, and his son Ryan, for their part in Operation Santa Claus role-playing as Mrs. Claus and Santa Junior.

This series begins with some historical photographs of hospital visits undertaken by previous individuals who played Santa Claus from the 1930s to the 1950s. This series on photographs also includes a few images of Harold Alkerton who was Jimmy Lomax’s Santa when Lomax was sick in the hospital as a child. Alkerton was the person who inspired Jimmy to play the role of Santa himself to other unfortunate children and adults. The photographs in this series also highlight the beginning of Lomax’s role as Santa Claus, Lomax family members, the Lomax family trip to Disney World, which they were awarded by the Hamilton business community, Santa visits to families, organizations and institutions, Operation Santa Claus fundraisers such as garage sales, picnics, toy rides, among others, as well as work parties, Jimmy Lomax on parade, the Santa Van and photographs of his awards and recognition. This series also includes a file of photographs with little archival context and unidentified individuals.

On February 1991, the Hamilton United Gay Societies (HUGS) transitioned to the Hamilton Gay and Lesbian Alliance (Hamilton GALA or HGALA). HGALA continued to provide services and information to the LGBTQ+ community and the broader community in Hamilton. The suborganizations under HGALA were the Lesbian/Gayline, Dance Committee Volunteers, Support Group, Youth Group, Hamilton Lesbian Collective (HLC), Lesbian Support Group, Speakers Bureau, Phoenix Newsletter, Hamilton-Wentworth Gay Archives and the Hamilton GALA Computer Bulletin Board.

The Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (formerly Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario) was established on January 18 and 19, 1975. CLGRO was a non-profit organization of groups and individuals committed to working towards feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual liberation by engaging in public struggle for full human rights, in promoting diversity and access within our communities and by strengthening cooperative networks for feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual activism. After 34 years, they dissolved on May 2nd, 2009. Today, Queer Ontario continues the work of CLGRO and preserves their history and documents.

The Hamilton-McMaster Gay Liberation Movement, the first gay liberation group in Hamilton, was founded by Dr. John Stewart and Susan Rosenthal after a lecture on homosexuality by George Hislop of the Community Homophile Association (CHAT) in November 1972. It was officially established with its first executive committee on January 1973. They changed their name to McMaster Homophile Association (MHA) on January 1976 and was active until 1979 under the name Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association. The Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association was a member of the National Gay Rights Coalition (NGRC), an organization of gay associations across Canada who challenged federal government laws regarding homosexuality. They were also a member of the Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario (later known as Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario, CLGRO), an organization of lesbian and gay groups and individuals focused in Ontario. They hosted dances, educational programs, established Hamilton’s first Gayline, and produced the Dialogue newsletters. The Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association was also politically active and submitted briefs to the Ontario Human Rights Commission to include sexual orientation within the Ontario Human Rights Code.

The Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Association of McMaster (formerly Gay and Lesbian Association at McMaster) was a social and support network for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals that began in 1986 and received support from the Hamilton United Gay Societies (HUGS). They had weekly support groups, social groups, peer counselling, educational presentations, a radio show on CFMU 93.3 FM, and a column on The Silhouette. GLBAM was a member of CLGRO and the Coalition of Lesbians and Gays on Campus (CLGC).

The Hamilton United Gay Societies (HUGS) was an umbrella organization for 12 sub-organizations established in 1980 and incorporated in 1982. HUGS provided a range of services and information, education and peer counselling, hosted social events, created spaces for support groups and connected people to other services that were related to LGBTQ+ issues. Gayline was Hamilton’s first telephone counselling service for gays and lesbians that was first operated by the Hamilton-McMaster Homophile Association on March 20, 1975 and was continued by HUGS. HUGS also had a community centre at 41 King William Street in downtown Hamilton.

The Hamilton AIDS Network for Dialogue and Support (HANDS) was founded in 1986 by Suzie Robinson, Michael Johnstone, David Des Jardins, John Vogel, and Dr. Jay Browne who were dedicated volunteers. HANDS was a registered charitable community-based organization that provided HIV and AIDS related education and support services to the Hamilton-Wentworth and Burlington area. HANDS distributed educational materials, published regular newsletters, had an information and support line and organized events such as the Speakers’ Bureau. They were also a member of the Canadian AIDS Society and the Ontario AIDS Network. HANDS changed its name to Hamilton AIDS Network in 1992 and is now known as The AIDS Network.

Series consists of agendas, meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, manuals, the HANDS, HANDS Volunteer, and Hamilton AIDS Network newsletters, and pamphlets. This series also contains records on the development of Hamilton’s first palliative care hospice facility, AIDS Prevention Task Force and Anonymous Testing working groups.

This series contains correspondence between the Hamilton Cricket club and its members and other cricket clubs, prominent Ontarians, and other institutions such as Ridley College, and the former Mimico Institute for the Insane. For preservation purposes, material is encapsulated.
