Rosedale

Screw (propeller) steamer built in 1888 in Sunderland, Scotland by the Sunderland Ship Building Company. In 1919, on a voyage from Cardiff, Wales to Bordeaux, France, the S.S. Luella collided with the Rosedale and caused her to sink, with the loss of most of the ship’s papers and documentation. The file contains mortgage papers, a collision report, a transcript of register for transmission to Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen, as well as correspondence from Customs Canada, the Department of Marine and Fisheries and the Inland Navigation Company Limited, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Rose and Annie Barker files

Series contains documentation of the lives of sisters Rose Barker (1867-1944) and Annie Barker and of their time at Wesleyan Ladies' College. Rose received her degree in 1893, and Annie received a certificate in music that same year. Series is comprised of the funeral address of Rose Hannah Barker, lesson notes, examination questions and essays, a certificate from the Temperance Society, and accounts, which consists of handwritten records of payment.

Restoration Projects

Series consists of records relating to the Fountain Foundation subcommittee. The Foundation was established in 1993 between the Society, corporations and members of the general public, in an effort to restore and rebuild the 1850s Gore Park fountain for Hamilton’s sesquicentennial celebration in 1996. The series contains project background information on the history of the fountain and its importance to Hamilton, copies of a proposal for the restoration of the fountain, meeting minutes, reports, financial and budget statements, balance sheets, fundraising event information, agreements made for work on the fountain and for contributions to the fund, correspondence, as well as marketing materials. The series also contains a file with 16 photographs of the event held for the rededication of the Gore Park fountain. The Foundation raised over $500,000 for the reconstruction of the fountain and in October of 1996, the reconstructed fountain was turned back on by then mayor Robert Morrow and Hamilton area MPP Sheila Copps.

Series consists of various reports including Orderly Officers’ Reports, which pertain to the inspections of the soldiers and their barracks. The officers report on the state of the men, the equipment, the food, hospital, roll call, mess hall, and the overall state of the barracks, dating from June to September 1842. The series also consists of Morning Reports for Captain Hebbes, Captain Tench, Captain Brown and Captain Lanes, which record the state of the militia each morning, including the number of soldiers under arms, on parade, on guard, sick, prisoners and casualties, dated October 18, 1842, October 20, 1842 and October 29, 1842. This series also includes one Daily Sick Report recording the names of the men, their company, whether they are in the hospital or in quarters, and the ailment they are suffering from, dated February 8, 1843. Some of the documents in this series are originals and some are photocopies of originals.

Renovations prior to the opening of Arliss Shoe Store 1948

Item is a photograph of the renovations to the building at 55-57-59 King Street East prior to its re-opening as Arliss Shoe Store in 1948. It had previously housed the R. McKay & Company dry goods store from 1903 to 1913, when the original building burned down. A new building was constructed, and in 1922 it was purchased by the Steel Stores, limited, an American organization who opened a retail store on the site for a short period of time. The building was subsequently divided and rented to several tenants including a restaurant, a bowling alley and several stores. In 1940, it was announced that the building had been acquired by the Adams Furniture Company of Toronto for $200,000. An article in the Spectator on August 15, 1941 announced the upcoming opening of Adams' Credit Departmental Store. They described the renovations of the building in glowing terms and in particular noted that in the centre of the ground floor there was an island display window which was cylindrical in shape and revolved slowly so that the wares displayed could be seen from every angle. It was stated that it was the largest revolving window in Canada. They were not in business long as the building was acquired by Arliss Shoe Store, which opened on the site May 29, 1948. "The new Arliss Shoe Store is now a Department Shoe Store. Dress shoes occupy the entire main floor. The men's department has been doubled and given a secluded spot where men can now shop conveniently away from the women's section. The men also have a new hosiery department."

Random Photographs, Negatives and Contact Sheets

Series consists of random photographs taken by Peter Stevens. The images include the exterior of three buildings, the interior of one building and a broken bicycle. The series also consists of various photographic negatives and contact sheets from photographs taken by Peter Stevens over the course of his career.

Series consists of the Club's promotional materials such as pamphlets, program guides, flyers, and information guides, as well as radio and news media releases. There are also newspaper clippings written mostly by former Club members George W. North and R. H. Westmore. The series also includes publication materials such as correspondence regarding articles for publication in The Wood Duck (the Club’s journal), as well as correspondence and documentation about the Club’s Naturally, Hamilton! publication.

There are also newspaper clippings containing articles on a Hamilton Spectator series called “Out of the Storied Past,” written by Society member Mabel Burkholder. This series also contains 6 video cassette tapes of television coverage of Society events and interviews regarding historical subjects related to the history of Hamilton.

Series consists of an advertisement for a Mechanics’ Ball to take place January 17, 1845 from the members of the Managing Committee of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute. There is also an announcement of lectures dated November 1848, that lists the dates and topics of each lecture, as well as the designated speaker. The topics include, but are not limited to, Mechanics’ Institutes, the influence of art and science on the wealth and character of the nation, longevity, the natural history of man, ornamental gardening, social economics, and the best way to supply towns with water. The lectures were held in the evenings at 7:30pm in the reading rooms and hall of the Institute. Members and their families were admitted free of charge, admission was charged for non-members and ladies were free.

Series consists of publicity for fundraisers for Operation Santa Claus such as flyers, newspaper advertisement inserts, and general notices. The series also consists of magazine publications featuring biographical information on Jimmy, as well as publicity for Operation Santa Claus. The magazines include Stelco Flashes, Hamilton Magazine, Hamilton Cue Magazine, the Downtown Hamilton Promenade Review, Reader’s Digest and the 50th Anniversary publication for Local 1005. This series also consists of a business card belonging to Jimmy Lomax.

Subseries consists of land ownership materials, including land grants and deeds, records documenting the transfer of land ownership, such as an indenture between George Hamilton and David Farley regarding land in Hamilton, and land grants for the Township of Harvey. Subseries also contains a memorial deed of partition, leases, a petition for a claim on land lots, a certificate of a land survey, notices for sale of properties, receipts for payment of taxes and rents, acknowledgements for receipts of land and money, as well as correspondence and lot surveys concerning the town of Preston, Ontario.
