Administrative history
The Wentworth County Agricultural Society was established in the mid-1800s to promote good agricultural practices and support rural communities in the region. Agriculture was essential to the success of the region and to the survival of the residents, so ensuring farmers were educated in the scientific principal of good agriculture, soil improvement, and the modernization of farm equipment, was of great concern and importance. The Society represented the smaller agricultural societies in the townships of Ancaster, Barton, Beverly, Binbrook, Dundas, East and West Flamborough, Glanford and Saltfleet, as well as the city of Hamilton, which paid membership fees to the larger organization. The Society elected officers and judges to organize and preside over fairs and exhibitions that showcased the livestock and yields of farmers, and awarded prizes for various categories including, but not limited to, best horse, cattle, sheep, poultry, fine wool, wheat and produce. The exhibitions were often held on the grounds of the Crystal Palace. The Society obtained revenue from grants from Hamilton City Council, membership subscription fees, booth, stand and stall rentals, participant entrance fees, and unclaimed prize money. The Wentworth County Agricultural Society is no longer in existence however, the Ancaster Agricultural Society still exists as of 2025, as do many fairs and exhibitions, which have endured and continue to be a mainstay of rural community life in the region of Hamilton-Wentworth, as well as Ontario.
Scope and content
The material consists of a volume of meeting minutes for the Wentworth County Agricultural Society, dated 1857 to 1888. The minutes record the general revenues including membership fees, funding grants, gate admission fees, booth, stand and stall rentals, and unclaimed prize money, as well as the general expenditures including prize money awarded, salaries of officers, judges’ expense accounts, labour and wages, building and land rentals, decorating expenses, stationary and postage, and badges and ribbons. The minutes also record the reading and acceptance of annual reports, the elections of officers and judges, the money received from membership societies, the rules and regulations of fairs and exhibitions, the logistics of operating the fairs and exhibitions, the prizes to be awarded for each category of entry, the names of the winners and the prize amounts awarded, the formation of committees, as well as the importance of educating farmers on the scientific principal of good agriculture. There are also some newspaper clippings that are glued to some of the pages. The clippings are articles reporting on the Society visits to farms to inspect the livestock and crop yields to determine if the farmer meets the criteria for participation in the fair or exhibition, reports from the judges’ examinations, as well as announcements of prizes awarded. There is also a looseleaf page of meeting minutes from January 21, 1885.

Physical condition
The volume is fragile and damaged and the front cover is starting to detach. A few pages at the end may also contain mold, so acid-free tissue paper has been placed between those pages and the volume has been placed in a plastic bag to help contain any spores.
