Zephyr

Screw (propeller) yacht steamer built in 1886 in Hamilton, Ontario by Thomas Reid. There is little information pertaining to this vessel and its voyage history. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, several ownership documents, legal correspondence, as well as correspondence from various individuals, Customs Canada, the Department of Transport, Marine Services, the Dominion Bank, and the National Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise Division, to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario.

File consists of photographs of Wright Fruit Company, established in April 1927 by chief shareholders, Solomon Wright and Percy Wright. Wright Fruit Company carried on a wholesale and commission business originally from 25 York Street, with other facilities at 77 MacNab Street North and 31 York Street in Hamilton. Facilities included climate-controlled ripening rooms for items such as tomatoes that arrived green and took up to two weeks to ripen enough for sale.

The material consists of records pertaining to the Wentworth Historical Society including administrative records, financial records, legal papers, correspondence, events and commemorations, historical essays, notices, newspaper clippings, glass plate negatives, a few photographs and maps, as well as a membership ribbon. The financial records also include a small amount of papers from Fred Hamilton, a former Secretary of the Wentworth Historical Society. There is also a small amount of material pertaining to the Ladies’ Committee including, administrative records, financial records, legal papers, correspondence, souvenir books and programs, and newspaper clippings.

The material consists of a volume of meeting minutes for the Wentworth County Agricultural Society, dated 1857 to 1888. The minutes record the general revenues including membership fees, funding grants, gate admission fees, booth, stand and stall rentals, and unclaimed prize money, as well as the general expenditures including prize money awarded, salaries of officers, judges’ expense accounts, labour and wages, building and land rentals, decorating expenses, stationary and postage, and badges and ribbons. The minutes also record the reading and acceptance of annual reports, the elections of officers and judges, the money received from membership societies, the rules and regulations of fairs and exhibitions, the logistics of operating the fairs and exhibitions, the prizes to be awarded for each category of entry, the names of the winners and the prize amounts awarded, the formation of committees, as well as the importance of educating farmers on the scientific principal of good agriculture. There are also some newspaper clippings that are glued to some of the pages. The clippings are articles reporting on the Society visits to farms to inspect the livestock and crop yields to determine if the farmer meets the criteria for participation in the fair or exhibition, reports from the judges’ examinations, as well as announcements of prizes awarded. There is also a looseleaf page of meeting minutes from January 21, 1885.

Series consists of an honour roll, a commemorative volume containing information about relatives of members of the Betram Hooper/ Wentworth Chapter who served in the Canadian military. Records include the following information about military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, where and when they volunteered, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those included in the volume were born between 1903-1923. Records are arranged in alphabetical order according to the individual's last name.

Records include the following information about military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, volunteer date and location, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those in the first volume were born 1906-1925, and those in the second volume were born 1875-1894. The second volume predates the first, honouring those who served in the Canadian military during "The Great War" (WWI). Records are arranged in alphabetical order by last name, with a few exceptions. The first entry in the second volume is the record for a relative of a member of the Malcolm Crerar Aviation Chapter. Photographs accompany the records of 18 individuals named in the volumes.

This series also contains a ledger recording the list of boxes of hospital supplies sent by the shipping department of the Paardeburg Chapter Hospital Committee to the Red Cross during the First World War.
