Dundee

Steel screw (propeller) steamer built in Dundee, Scotland in 1906 by the Caledonia Shipbuilding & Engineering Company. The vessel was owned by several companies and was requisitioned for use during World War One. It was sunk by an enemy submarine in March of 1917. The file contains a Certificate of British Registry, shipping port transfer documentation from the Port of Dundee, Scotland to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario, transfer of mortgage documents, as well as some correspondence from the Canada Steamship Lines and the Department of Marine and Fisheries, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario and the Registrar of Shipping, Dundee, Scotland.

Iris

Screw (propeller) steamer yacht measuring 47 x 10 x 5 feet, 15.5 tonnage, built in Hamilton, Ontario in 1903 by John and William Robertson. There is little information pertaining to the ship and its voyage history. The file contains ownership documents and certificates, a mortgage certificate, a letter written by the ship builders certifying that they built the vessel, as well as correspondence from various individuals, the Department of Transport, Marine Services, National Revenue Canada, and Customs and Excise Office Division, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Miss Vancouver

Motorboat measuring 33 x 7 x 2 feet, 4.75 tonnage, built in Gravenhurst, Ontario by Ditchburn Boats Limited. There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains ownership, transfers and registration documents, a certificate of survey, a builder’s certificate, telegraphs, legal correspondence, as well as correspondence from Ditchburn Boats Limited, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, National Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise Division and the Department of Transport, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Wachonda

Screw (propeller) steamer measuring 230 x 37 x 21 feet, 1,554 tonnage, built in 1903 in Glasgow, Scotland by Russell & Company. There is little information pertaining to this vessel and its voyage history. The file contains a certificate of British Registry, ownership and registration documents, mortgage papers, receipts, a telegraph, as well as correspondence from Customs House Glasgow, Scotland to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Canada Steamship Lines Limited, and the Department of Marine and Fisheries.

Brookes, Ivan S.

The fonds consists of Ivan Brookes’ unpublished manuscript for Hamilton Harbour 1826-1901, two Stelco anniversary booklets: The 25th Milestone: A Brief History of Stelco the Steel Company of Canada Limited 1910-1935 and 50th Anniversary Issue Stelco Flashes 1910-1960 and a scrapbook of images used in the manuscript.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence related to the activities of the IODE and matters of interest to the organization, including the announcement of the Armistice (WWI), infringement of the IODE constitution, and parcels (containing clothing, bedding, and foodstuffs) sent overseas by Hamilton chapters of the IODE. Included is correspondence related to the involvement of the Claremont Chapter in the school "adoption" program. Series also contains address books, accompanied by secretaries notes and correspondence.

Awards and ephemera

Series consists of certificates and plaques awarded to the IODE Hamilton Chapters by various institutions and organizations, including Women’s Voluntary Services, Mohawk College, Ronald McDonald House, the Canadian Red Cross, the Pediatric Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Bolingbroke Restoration Project, Our Millennium, and St. Matthew's House, and by various government bodies, namely the City of Hamilton, the Office of the Mayor (Hamilton), and the Government of Canada. Series also contains IODE membership awards and certificates of recognition for military service. In addition to awards, the series includes correspondence from the Canadian Manufacturer’s Exhibition, a copy of the creed of the IODE, two identical china plates featuring a depiction of IODE Hamilton Municipal Headquarters, a plaque from Fonthill recognizing the donation of the residence in memory of Mrs. S.O. Greening, and a framed hand-stitched banner.

Hamilton Soldiers Benefit Fund

Series consists of lists of recipients of the Hamilton Soldiers Benefit Fund for daughters of deceased soldiers, provided by the Big Sisters of Paardeburg. After World War I, the Big Sisters of Paardeburg formed as an organization within the chapter to assist daughters of deceased Hamilton soldiers, known as the Little Sisters of Paardeburg.

War Service records

Series consists of an honour roll, a commemorative volume containing information about relatives of members of the Paardeburg Chapter who served in the Canadian military. Records include the following information for military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, where and when they volunteered, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those included in the volume were born between 1859-1925. Names are listed according to rank. Photographs accompany the records of 7 of the 76 individuals named in the volume. This series also contains a ledger recording the list of boxes of hospital supplies sent by the shipping department of the Paardeburg Chapter Hospital Committee to the Red Cross during the First World War.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, the contents of which include newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, and other material pertaining to the activities of the General Allenby Chapter. The scrapbook for 1935-1948 includes articles from 1919 and 1924, as well as an autographed photograph of Edmund Allenby. The scrapbook for 1949-1960 includes a record of past regents and life members of the chapter. The 25th and 50th anniversaries of the chapter are also documented in the scrapbooks.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence regarding the chapter's educational work with local schools, donations to schools, and bestowal of awards to students, including the W. Eileen Kerr Award given annually to the student who has achieved the highest standing in grade 12 and intends to continue on to grade 13. Correspondence includes information about Frontier College, a private adult education organization, located in Toronto, focusing on basic language and citizenship studies.

Hamilton AIDS Network for Dialogue and Support (HANDS)

The Hamilton AIDS Network for Dialogue and Support (HANDS) was founded in 1986 by Suzie Robinson, Michael Johnstone, David Des Jardins, John Vogel, and Dr. Jay Browne who were dedicated volunteers. HANDS was a registered charitable community-based organization that provided HIV and AIDS related education and support services to the Hamilton-Wentworth and Burlington area. HANDS distributed educational materials, published regular newsletters, had an information and support line and organized events such as the Speakers’ Bureau. They were also a member of the Canadian AIDS Society and the Ontario AIDS Network. HANDS changed its name to Hamilton AIDS Network in 1992 and is now known as The AIDS Network.

Series consists of agendas, meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, manuals, the HANDS, HANDS Volunteer, and Hamilton AIDS Network newsletters, and pamphlets. This series also contains records on the development of Hamilton’s first palliative care hospice facility, AIDS Prevention Task Force and Anonymous Testing working groups.

Series consists of materials from various organizations and events across Canada that were collected by Michael Johnstone such as pamphlets, newsletters, correspondence and information sheets.

HUGS/HGALA Honour Roll Dinners

This subseries are of photographs from the second to the fifth Honour Roll Dinners. The first Honour Roll Dinner was held on November 26, 1986 at Fazari Brothers Restaurant, 228 King St. West. The Honour Roll was awarded to Susie Robinson. There is no photographic record of this dinner.
