Series consists of three undated militia muster rolls including one for Captain Hatt’s Company of Volunteers of the 5th Lincoln and 2nd York Militia, which lists the names of the soldiers including Daniel McAfee and Sergeant Angus McAfee, a muster roll of Captain James Durand’s 2nd Flank Company of the 5th Lincoln Militia, which also lists Sergeant Angus McAfee and Daniel McAfee, and a roll call of Captain Andrew Kerby’s Company. There is also a partial pay list of the 5th Lincoln Militia dated December 25, 1812 to May 24, 1813, for Sergeants Angus McAfee and George Hughson, Regimental Orders from Fort Detroit dating from 1809, a Military Return for Lieutenant Robert Young’s Company, First Haldimand Militia dated June 4, 1841, detailing the number of men present on parade, absent with leave, absent without leave, and absent due to sickness, as well as a travel authorization pass for Angus McAfee, given at the police office in Montreal, Quebec, dated February 4, 1814.

Series consist of postcards that showcase Hamilton’s military history, in particular the 91st Highlanders, military parades throughout the city, and the armoury on James Street North.

Series consists of minute books for meetings of the Municipal Chapter, including subseries for house committee and property committee meetings, as well as a subseries for the Khaki Club, which documents the Municipal Chapter's contributions to the Khaki Club. Minute books are arranged by type of meeting, then chronologically by date of meeting.

Series consists of a minute book for meetings of the Fessenden Chapter held May 1900 to January 1902. The minute book contains correspondence pertaining to the chapter's request to become the Municipal Chapter of Hamilton.

Series consists of minute books for meetings of the Paardeburg Chapter, containing information about the activities of the chapter, including photographs of an event at Civic Stadium, paperwork documenting the ceremonial presentation of the colours of the South African Boer War Veterans to the Paardeburg Chapter, and legal paperwork pertaining to the establishment of a bursary at McMaster University.

Minute Books

Series consists of 13 volumes of minute books of the Ladies Benevolent Society. The minutes detail the transactions of Society business as well as the administration of the Aged Women’s Home, with some references to the Hamilton Orphan Asylum as well. Some of the minute books contain the names of the residents of the Aged Women’s Home and specific volumes detail the distribution of relief to individuals and families in various wards, which was provided by the Society over and above the operation of the residence. Some of the minute books are divided into two parts, the first being the minutes of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society or the Aged Women’s Home and then the volume is flipped upside down and the rest of the minute book details the distribution of relief given out to individuals and families in the community. These volumes record the ward number, the type of relief given such as food, wood, clothing, money, etc., as well as any general remarks.

Series consists of board meeting minutes and two minute books. Series also contains minutes from annual meetings and various committees including the executive committee, fundraising committee and planning and programming committee. Series also contains annual and committee reports.

Miss Vancouver

Motorboat measuring 33 x 7 x 2 feet, 4.75 tonnage, built in Gravenhurst, Ontario by Ditchburn Boats Limited. There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains ownership, transfers and registration documents, a certificate of survey, a builder’s certificate, telegraphs, legal correspondence, as well as correspondence from Ditchburn Boats Limited, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, National Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise Division and the Department of Transport, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Modjeska

Screw (propeller) steamer built in Yoker, Scotland in 1889 by Napier, Shanks and Bell. From 1889 to 1927 the Modjeska was operated by the Hamilton Steamship Lines as a freight and passenger ship between Hamilton and Toronto, including moonlight excursions. The ship was sold to the Owen Sound Transportation Company, re-built and re-named the Manitoulin where it plied the waters of Georgian Bay near Owen Sound and Collingwood, Ontario. The file contains ownership, registration and transfer documents, a certificate of survey, mortgage certificates, receipts, memorandums, a bond surety, as well as correspondence to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton from the Hamilton Steamboat Company, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, Customs Canada, and the Owen Sound Transportation Company Limited.

File also includes a letter from Waldon to Wickens about the Wesleyan Ladies' College Alumnae Literary Club.

File consists of a biographical sketch written by Louise E. Ramsay (Mrs. F. G.) Purchase, of Beamsville, about her mother, Janet T. Coatsworth Ramsay, who received her Mistress of English Literature degree (1875-1879), and correspondence between Waldon and Purchase.

Screw (propeller) yacht steamer measuring 68 x 10 x 3 feet, 29 tonnage, built in Toronto, Ontario in 1890 by Polson Iron Works for William Eli Sanford, a prominent Hamilton politician and businessman. There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains ownership documents, a bill of sale, legal correspondence, a probate will for William Eli Sandford, as well as correspondence from Customs Canada, Collector’s Office, and the Department of Transport, Marine Services, to and from the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.

Neepawah

Screw (propeller) steamer measuring 245 x 40 x 22 feet, 1,799 tonnage, built in 1903 in Greenock, Scotland by Grangemouth and Greenock Dockyard Company. The vessel had several owners and was captured by a submarine and sunk in April of 1917 during the First World War. The file contains a certificate of British Registry, ownership documents, as well as correspondence from the Customs House of Glasgow, Scotland to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton, Ontario.

Newspaper Clippings

Series consists of newspaper clippings from various newspapers including the Hamilton Spectator, the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, the Hamilton Mountain News, the Dundas Star Journal, the Stoney creek News and the Hamilton Journal, pertaining to Jimmy Lomax and his fundraising for Operation Santa Claus, as well as articles about his life, career and family, including the death of his son Ryan, from cancer in 1987.

Series consists of newspaper clippings from various newspapers including the Hamilton Spectator, the Weekly Banner and the Weekly Times, pertaining to the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute, including the announcement of a concert taking place, the announcement of the Eighth Annual Festival in support of the Institute and which featured speakers, musical performances, and Shakespearean readings, an article review on the Mechanics’ Institute Festival and the highlights of the event, a few articles on lecture reviews hosted by the Institute, an article announcing an upcoming lecture, as well as a few lists of book titles added to the collection.

Series consists of photographs and negatives of non-human subjects. Examples include but are not limited to, a camera, cats, gloves, the Gore Park Queen Victoria sculpture and a stereo walkman.

Series consists of a notice advertising a buffet supper to mark the closing of the canteen, dated November 16, 1945, a retail bulletin from the Wartime Prices and Trade Board outlining the maximum price for various retail items, dated August 16, 1943, as well as an undated leaflet from the Red Cross of a poem entitled, “Don’t Forget To Smile,” written by J.I. Schell, Barlochan, Muskoka, reminding volunteers to be happy and cheerful when they knit for the soldiers bravely fighting overseas.

Screw (propeller) steamer measuring 56 x 11 x 5 feet, 32 tonnage, built in 1896 in Hamilton, Ontario by Melanchthon Simpson. There is little information pertaining to the vessel and its voyage history. The file contains a builder’s certificate, a certificate of survey, ownership documents, a certificate of marking verifying it’s seaworthiness, receipts, telegrams and memorandums, legal correspondence, and correspondence from Killey-Beckett Engine Company Limited, Customs Canada, and the Department of Transport, to the Registrar of Shipping, Hamilton.
