Photographs

Series consists of photographs of annual meetings of the Municipal Chapter, the 100th Anniversary Luncheon, annual meetings of the Toronto Municipal Chapter and the Provincial Chapter of Ontario, photographs of various Holbrook Public School outings supported by IODE funding, photographs of Fonthill, including pictures of the interior and exterior of the house, and photographs of Native Sena Memorial Elementary School, Weagamow Lake. Photographs have been removed from albums for preservation purposes. Textual records, such as clippings, letters, newsletters and notes from events accompany some of the photographs. Series also contains photographs, which were not contained in albums, documenting volunteer work and various chapter activities, as well as a reception held for Ellen Fairclough.

Bibles

Series consists of one Holy Bible, which contains details about the Van Sickle family of Lynden; and two pocket-sized prayer books, containing select readings from the BIble.

Contracts

Series consists of an indenture detailing a contract between the Sonora Mining Company and The Trusts and Guarantees Company Limited (Toronto).

Diairies

Series contains 32 personal diaries: one dated 1888-1892, and one for each year from 1912 to 1942. The diaries detail Webb's daily life, and contain both personal and work-related information. Some diaries include newspaper clippings, such as obituaries, as well as lists of expenditures.

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Professor R.C. Archibald of Mount Allison Memorial Library, Sackville, New Brunswick, concerning the closing of Wesleyan Ladies' College, the first principal, degrees given, the Alumnae Association, the first woman to receive a bachelor's degree, the music library at Mount Allison, the first graduate, Burlington Ladies' Academy and Woodstock College.

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Annie E. Barker, of Toronto, concerning the Act of Incorporation; the time that Annie and her sister, Rose, spent at Wesleyan Ladies’ College and Victoria University; the death of Florence E. Mamie L. Cunningham

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Mamie L. Cunningham, of Toronto, regarding her grandfather, Dr. Rice, principal of Wesleyan for many years, and Cunnigham's mother, Sarah Elizabeth Starr Rice, who graduated with an M.L.A. degree from Wesleyan in 1864 and was principal of the school from 1868-1873, and regarding Mrs. Griffith and some of the other pupils.

Books and pamphlets

Series consists a bible, and various books and pamphlets, including informational pamphlets about flag anniversaries and commemorative flag-raising; souvenir and commemorative pamphlets; a catalogue of photograph and painting reproductions offered by the IODE to schools for educational use; meeting minutes for annual national meetings, and a record of post-graduate scholarship holders for 1920-1940.

Chapter histories

Series consists of two chapter histories. One book is a municipal chapter history, which contains by-laws (1985) for the chapter, the names of life members, the names of Hamilton IODE chapters with the dates each organized and disbanded, as well as the names of executive members present at annual meetings, including officers and conveners, stewards and house committee chairmen. The other book contains histories for Hamilton IODE chapters. The book contains a 50-year history for the Municipal Chapter, the St. Hilda Chapter, the St. Elizabeth Chapter, the St. Cecilia Chapter, the Caxton Chapter, the Paardeburg Chapter, the General Allenby Chapter, and the 67th University Battery Chapter. Some of the histories include an addendum that documents the next 10 years of the chapter, resuming from the point at which the 50-year history concluded.

Awards and ephemera

Series consists of certificates and plaques awarded to the IODE Hamilton Chapters by various institutions and organizations, including Women’s Voluntary Services, Mohawk College, Ronald McDonald House, the Canadian Red Cross, the Pediatric Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Bolingbroke Restoration Project, Our Millennium, and St. Matthew's House, and by various government bodies, namely the City of Hamilton, the Office of the Mayor (Hamilton), and the Government of Canada. Series also contains IODE membership awards and certificates of recognition for military service. In addition to awards, the series includes correspondence from the Canadian Manufacturer’s Exhibition, a copy of the creed of the IODE, two identical china plates featuring a depiction of IODE Hamilton Municipal Headquarters, a plaque from Fonthill recognizing the donation of the residence in memory of Mrs. S.O. Greening, and a framed hand-stitched banner.

Photographic negatives

Series consists of photographic negatives, the majority of which pertain to industry and commerce in Hamilton and elsewhere in Ontario during the 1930s-1950s. Many images in the series document wartime activity in industrial plants, such as the preparation of packages for soldiers and the Miss War Worker contest of 1942. Series includes images of schools, including McMaster University, the High School of Commerce, and Westdale Secondary School; other local sites, such as the Royal Botanical Gardens and Municipal Swimming Pool; and local churches. Series also depicts employees, products, facilities and activities of businesses, including Stelco, Hamilton Works Council, Sawyer Massey Co., Westinghouse, Hamilton Bridgeworks, Burlington Steel, Harry Adler Furniture Co., Central Garage, R.T. Kelley Inc., Canadian Canners, Steel Co. Canada, Hamilton Hydro, Duff's Meat Store, the Pigott Building, Dominion Rubber Co., Consumer's Lumber Co. Ltd., Hamilton Cotton Co., the Royal Connaught Hotel, Canadian Steamship Lines, United-Carr Fastener Co. Series also contains images pertaining to associations and teams, such as the Women's League of Health & Beauty, National Steel Car War Veteran's Association, McLaren Motor Sales hockey team, and the Falcons Hockey Team in St. Catharines. There are also images documenting events, such as the royal visit in 1939, and the Miss Canada Pageant in 1948. Series includes copy negatives of Columbia Records advertising materials and album covers from the 1940s.

Financial records

Series consists of business transaction records for Hamilton chapters of the IODE, including a bank book, cheques and receipts, as well as records documenting donations made to the Jamaica Earthquake Relief Fund.

War Service records

Series consists of an honour roll, commemorative volume containing information about relatives of members of the St. Elizabeth Chapter who served in the Canadian military during Word War I (1914-1918). Records include the following information about military personnel: name and rank, birth date, parents, whether they were of United Empire Loyalist descent, marital status, where and when they volunteered, home unit, present unit, training location, and details about their military service, including promotions and honours received. All those included in the volume were born between 1880-1899. Photographs accompany the records of 14 of the 25 individuals named in the volume.

Correspondence

Series consists of handwritten letters addressed to Mrs. Victor Ross, President of the Hospital Committee of the Paardeburg Chapter, expressing gratitude for the chapter's contributions to hospitals.

Hamilton Soldiers Benefit Fund

Series consists of lists of recipients of the Hamilton Soldiers Benefit Fund for daughters of deceased soldiers, provided by the Big Sisters of Paardeburg. After World War I, the Big Sisters of Paardeburg formed as an organization within the chapter to assist daughters of deceased Hamilton soldiers, known as the Little Sisters of Paardeburg.

Series consists of scrapbooks containing articles, letters and photographs, documenting the activities of the Princess Margaret Rose Chapter or pertaining to Princess Margaret Rose.

Series consists of reports of the Princess Margaret Rose Chapter, including annual reports and financial statements, educational reports, and membership convener's reports.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence regarding the chapter's educational work with local schools, donations to schools, and bestowal of awards to students, including the W. Eileen Kerr Award given annually to the student who has achieved the highest standing in grade 12 and intends to continue on to grade 13. Correspondence includes information about Frontier College, a private adult education organization, located in Toronto, focusing on basic language and citizenship studies.

Series consists of correspondence related to the activities of the IODE and matters of interest to the organization, including the announcement of the Armistice (WWI), infringement of the IODE constitution, and parcels (containing clothing, bedding, and foodstuffs) sent overseas by Hamilton chapters of the IODE. Included is correspondence related to the involvement of the Claremont Chapter in the school "adoption" program. Series also contains address books, accompanied by secretaries notes and correspondence.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, which contain photographs, letters, newspaper clippings and other material, documenting the activities of the Paardeburg Chapter. Series includes a scrapbook containing information about parcels sent by the chapter to Hamilton soldiers overseas; a scrapbook dedicated to the history of the chapter; and scrapbooks documenting chapter anniversaries and activities, including a scrapbook from the Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin Chapter dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Paardeburg Chapter.

The Portfolio was produced by Wesleyan students in the Senior and Junior Literary Societies, with contributions from alumnae. Series includes a bound edition of The Portfolio, which contains issues 1:1 to 2:9, as well as single issues ranging from 1:6 to 15:6, with exceptions.

Course Catalogues

Series consists of annual catalogues for Wesleyan Ladies' College, which contain lists of courses offered, faculty members, graduates and current students, as well as information about fees, student and alumnae associations, etc.

Edith Ellen Bowlby files

Series consists of the records of Edith Ellen (Adams) Bowlby (1864-1931), who attended Wesleyan Ladies' College as both a student and a teacher. Series includes photographs (featuring unidentified students of Wesleyan), studentship cards, and correspondence between Margaret Bowlby, daughter of Edith Ellen, and Freda Waldon, which includes a copy of the entry about Bowlby from the National Encyclopedia of Canadian Biography (1937).

Rose and Annie Barker files

Series contains documentation of the lives of sisters Rose Barker (1867-1944) and Annie Barker and of their time at Wesleyan Ladies' College. Rose received her degree in 1893, and Annie received a certificate in music that same year. Series is comprised of the funeral address of Rose Hannah Barker, lesson notes, examination questions and essays, a certificate from the Temperance Society, and accounts, which consists of handwritten records of payment.

Lillie Hardy files

Series contains documentation, primarily correspondence addressed to Miss Hardy, Secretary of the Wesleyan Ladies' College Alumnae, pertaining to courses, essays, and alumnae activities. Much of the correspondence is conducted with Pastor J.H. Willey of University Avenue M.E. Church in Syracuse, N.Y. Correspondence between Hardy and cookbook author and cookery instructor Emma P. (Emma Pike) Ewing concerning home economics courses is accompanied by University programs and journal clippings. Series also contains essays on various subjects.

Series contains materials related to the Alumnae Association, including constitution, bylaws, and rules of order (1877) ; annual reports ; lectures and programs ; invitations to at-homes, levees and receptions ; Literary Club materials ; Membership materials ; Mrs. Ewing's cooking school programs ; badges, diplomas and awards (including copies of a diploma awarded to Hester Ann Rogers Horner in 1958, prior to incorporation, as well as original diplomas awarded to Matilda Meharry in 1871 and Lillie Hardy in 1887) ; as well as a manuscript book, which contains lists of music pupils and concert programs.

Papers about the college

Series consists of documentation pertaining to the history of Wesleyan Ladies' College, including a paper by Louise M. Griffith, whose father, W.P. Wright, taught at Wesleyan, a paper and handwritten notes by Freda F. Waldon, and the act to incorporate the college (1861).

Trail Status Reports

Series consists of status reports submitted by volunteers who walked different sections of the Bruce Trail recording the trail conditions such as garbage, vandalism, broken and fallen trees, exposed roots, and bridges and stairways in need of repairs. Conditions were recorded on a log sheet along with suggestions for improvements to the trail.

Publications and Publicity

Series consists of Bruce Trail Association publications, such as reports and planning documents (1989, 1997), including an economic impact and user study of the Bruce Trail, Iroquoia Memoirs written by a member of the Club, as well as newspaper clippings (1985-2012) featuring articles on the Club, the trail and the escarpment.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of scrapbooks, including a scrapbook with excerpts from The Wood Duck (1961-1965, and 1998), the journal of the Hamilton Naturalists' Club, documenting the formation of the Bruce Trail Association and the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club. One scrapbook also contains brochures and unused Iroquoia Bruce Trail Letterhead.

Series contains The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club Volunteer of the Year award plaque for 1999 and a plaque from The Bruce Trail Association recognizing The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club as Trustee of the Escarpment. Series also consists of two Club badges including the Iroquoia End to End badge given to individuals who complete the trail from end to end, as well as the Snowshoe Challenge Badge given to individuals who complete six winter hikes in one season.

Audio Visual Material

Series consists of a 13 minute VHS recording of an interview with artist Robert Bateman, conducted by Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club member Raymond Lowes. The interview pertains to the conception of the Bruce Trail, which was an idea conceived by Robert Bateman in the 1960s. He was concerned that if people did not use the escarpment area as a hiking trail, then it would be lost to developers.

Correspondence and Reminiscences

Series consists of a one-page letter with accompanying reminiscences. The letter, dated July 23, 1903 was written by Thomas L. Kinrade, to W.C. Morton of Hamilton, Ontario. The four accompanying pages are Thomas L. Kinrade's reminiscences about the militia during the Fenian Raids in 1866 including a reference to Isaac Buchanan, a prominent Hamilton citizen. Other memories include the Central Public School “sheds” that were located along the streets near the school, religious instruction in public schools, as well as thoughts about a former principal of Central Public School, Archibald McCallum, who served from 1858-1870.

Family Records

Series consists of obituaries for Robert and Marion, two photographs, as well as two newspaper clippings, one referring to their marriage, the other about Robert receiving his high school diploma 60 years after he graduated.

Employment Documents

Series consists of a salesman route sheet belonging to Robert Lawrence. The sheet records the towns and cities he visited during the month of February 1948, while employed as a travelling salesman for the Life Savers Company.

Correspondence

Series consists of letters written by Robert Lawrence to his wife, Marion, while he was stationed overseas during the Second World War, and when he was employed as a travelling salesman throughout Southern Ontario. Marion began corresponding with Robert on the request of his father Blackwell Lawrence, who she met while working the lunch counter at the Federal Five and Dime Restaurant on Ottawa Street North, Hamilton.

The collection consists primarily of political cartoons drawn by Graeme MacKay for The Hamilton Spectator. Topics covered in the cartoons are wide-ranging, and involve many political issues facing Canada, Ontario and the city of Hamilton. All of the drawings are “working originals” with a few partial sketches that may be missing captions or have blank areas.
