Series consists of the research materials of Dr. Freda F. Waldon, Chief Librarian of the Hamilton Public Library. Dr. Waldon and members of the library board were interested in researching the history of early libraries in Hamilton, and in particular, the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute. They noticed there was a gap in the knowledge of the early libraries that existed before the establishment of the Hamilton Public Library in 1889. The series consists of Dr. Waldon’s correspondence to and from various individuals requesting assistance with her research. Her letter correspondence includes asking certain individuals about their recollections of the Mechanics’ Institute, including a plea to the editor of the Hamilton Spectator, to publish her request in the paper so that members of the community could provide information from their own personal experience, or as descendants of the original members of the Mechanics’ Institute. She was particularly interested in where the Institute was located, the reasons for the demise of the organization and what existed between the end of the Mechanics’ Institute and the establishment of the government-funded public library system. The series also contains Dr. Waldon’s handwritten and typewritten research notes about the history of the Mechanics’ Institute and early libraries. The series also consists of some of her published research including a letter she wrote that was printed in the Ontario Library Review entitled, “From Mechanics’ Institute to Cultural Centre,” dated Febrary, 1949, as well as an address she gave to the Head-of-the-Lake Historical Society, October 11, 1946 entitled, “Early Provision for Libraries in Hamilton.” The speech was later published in the Wentworth Bygones, From the Papers and Records of the Head-of-the-Lake Historical Society, Issue No. 4, 1963.

Series consists of various types of correspondence including general correspondence, correspondence regarding the construction and maintenance of battlefield monuments, correspondence and notes regarding Indigenous peoples such as the Neutral Indians and the location of an Indigenous village called Tinawatawa, as well as correspondence, notes and a map pertaining to French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, who landed in the Burlington Bay area in the 17th century.

Subseries consists of correspondence, notes and a historical sketch pertaining to the French explorer, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and his arrival at Burlington Bay on September 21, 1669, as well as a reprint of a 1669 map outlining his probable route to the Indigenous village Tinawatawa titled, “La Salle’s probable route to Tinawatawa, September 19 to 24, 1669.” The historical sketch was written by Edwin Kirwan Martin, a lawyer and historian with a thorough knowledge of Burlington Bay and the surrounding area. His studies of the Neutral Indians and La Salle’s exploration of the area were prepared for the Wentworth Historical Society, of which he was an active member, in preparation for the unveiling of the monument to La Salle, which was presented by the Wentworth Historical Society on June 9, 1923.

Subseries consists of letter correspondence regarding the site of the Stoney Creek Battlefield monument, reports and finances, government grant funding, member resignations, meeting attendance, and bank correspondence regarding the inactive status of the account.

Series consists of a number of notices to Society members of upcoming meetings, as well as invitations to various events hosted by the Society, including a ball, causeries, luncheons, bridge parties, outings, tours of Battlefield House, and lectures, addresses and presentations on various history-related topics. There is also an invitation requesting members attend the unveiling of the tower monument commemorating the Battle of Stoney Creek during the War of 1812, dated June 6, 1913. The invitation announces that Her Majesty Queen Mary, would do the honours remotely by electricity over a telegraph cable.

The letters predominantly consist of requests regarding author and poetry readings, the organization of poetry events, as well as correspondence that promotes and raises the profile of the Hamilton Poetry Centre in the community. This file includes a letter from Margaret Atwood (April 27, 1987) declining an invitation to read. The series also consists of tax correspondence between members of the Hamilton Poetry Centre and the Canada Council regarding T4 slips and grant funding.

Subseries consists of a court document related to a case from the State of New Hampshire, USA in the names of Edward Lerned versus Calvin McQuesten. This subseries also includes documentation from the Provincial Secretary's Office regarding Isaac Baldwin McQuesten’s Commission as Notary Public, as well as the Department of State in Ottawa regarding a release of judgment being referred to the Minister of Justice.

Series consists of court martial proceedings for various soldiers in the First Battalion Incorporated Militia. The first record pertains to Sergeant William W. Dawson of No. 4 Company, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of “irregular and unsoldierlike conduct in having been drunk and unfit for duty,” on Saturday, February 9, 1839. The document records the proceedings and the witness testimony, as well as the guilty verdict and the punishment, which was Sergeant Dawson’s reduction of rank and pay to that of a private sentinel, dated at Hamilton, February 13, 1839. The second record pertains to Private Joseph Forster of No. 8 Company, who was ordered by Major Gourlay, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion Incorporated Militia, to stand trial for being absent without leave for a period of 10 days from June 7 to June 17, 1839. Private Forster pled guilty and was subsequently sentenced to 10 days in solitary confinement, dated at Hamilton on June 20th, 1839. The third record pertains to a proceeding to investigate a complaint from a civilian tavern keeper against three soldiers from the militia, accused of stealing logs of wood on December 27, 1841. The final few records, which are undated and incomplete, pertain to Lance Sergeant Robert Thompson, charged with threatening and assaulting Sergeant Gilbert. Some of the records in this series are original and some are photocopies.

Series consists of a notice advertising a buffet supper to mark the closing of the canteen, dated November 16, 1945, a retail bulletin from the Wartime Prices and Trade Board outlining the maximum price for various retail items, dated August 16, 1943, as well as an undated leaflet from the Red Cross of a poem entitled, “Don’t Forget To Smile,” written by J.I. Schell, Barlochan, Muskoka, reminding volunteers to be happy and cheerful when they knit for the soldiers bravely fighting overseas.

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Mrs. R.L. Charles, of Toronto, regarding Professor J.F. McLaughlin's teaching days at the Wesleyan Ladies' College; C.I.D. Moore and his sister, and the Alumnae Association.

Series consists of scrapbooks, the contents of which include newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, and other material pertaining to the activities of the General Allenby Chapter. The scrapbook for 1935-1948 includes articles from 1919 and 1924, as well as an autographed photograph of Edmund Allenby. The scrapbook for 1949-1960 includes a record of past regents and life members of the chapter. The 25th and 50th anniversaries of the chapter are also documented in the scrapbooks.

Series consists of correspondence regarding the chapter's educational work with local schools, donations to schools, and bestowal of awards to students, including the W. Eileen Kerr Award given annually to the student who has achieved the highest standing in grade 12 and intends to continue on to grade 13. Correspondence includes information about Frontier College, a private adult education organization, located in Toronto, focusing on basic language and citizenship studies.

Subseries consists of documentation for two clients of Alexander Logie; Donald Frederick Campbell of Brampton, Ontario, and Sir John A. MacDonald of Kingston, Ontario. The documentation for Donald F. Campbell includes receipts and correspondence related to the sale of furniture, an assurance policy and receipts for premium fees, records related to the valuation of land and certification of title for lots in Chinquaconey (now Brampton, Ontario), correspondence related to a dispute between Owen Nowlan and Alexander Logie, Richard H. Rae, Donald F. Campbell and Thomasina Catherine Campbell, as well as a marriage contract between Donald F. Campbell and Thomasina Catherine Brega. The documentation related to Sir John A. MacDonald includes deeds for lots in Moore Township, statements documenting land sales, in such locales as Dover, Moore and Sombra, as well as correspondence between Sir John A. MacDonald and Alexander Logie, mostly concerning land sales and politics.

Series consists of a framed certificate awarded to Herman Herzog Levy Esquire, appointed to be an Additional Officer of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire, dated July 1, 1946. There is also a framed poem written by an unknown author, about Herman H. Levy and the Levy Brothers Company titled, “Oh Mr. Levy – How Could You?” The poem laments the rationing of metals during World War Two and its effects on such a renowned company.

Subseries consists of general correspondence pertaining to the original structure of the house, suggestions for improvements to the house to make it more appealing to visitors, and proposals and suggestions for programming at the property. There is also a letter sent from Councillor J. Heugh, Chairman of the Town of Stoney Creek to the Women’s Wentworth Historical Society regarding the book “Niagara,” in which the author, Philip D. (Dudley) Mason, mentions the park, museum and monument. The letter expresses the dismay that the author would refer to the park as nothing more than a field and describe the war memorial as ugly. The writer also sent carbon copies to various other relevant organizations and individuals asking how they felt about the author’s disparaging comments.

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence between the Society and other historical societies and organizations, funding agencies, levels of government, as well as the general public. The series also includes public reference requests, which are predominantly genealogical in nature. Some documents are fragile and torn.

Series consists of documentation and reports on several environmental conservation projects initiated by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club out of concern for the protection of the environment and the local community. Projects include but are not limited to, a water quality study of Cootes Paradise, the use of Dombind (a dust suppressant) on roadways, legislation to protect endangered species, land evaluations and inventories of natural areas such as the Eramosa Karst, Friends of the Red Hill Valley group, the Nature Counts Project, the construction of the Red Hill Creek Expressway, the concern over leachate at the Rennie and Brampton Streets Landfill Sites, Save Our Ravines, Save the Oak Ridges Moraine, tree cutting and the West Harbour Trails. This series also includes photographs of the Falcon Watch project from a peregrine falcon observation session at the Sheraton Hotel in Hamilton.

Series consists of general correspondence and representative correspondence pertaining to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. Included in this series is an undated note from an individual who enclosed a Hamilton Chamber of Commerce medallion (no ribbon attached). The medallion is dated 1864 and the sender of the note felt the Chamber would like to have this item. The Chamber responded by letter dated 1955, thanking the sender.

Series consists of photographs of Jimmy Lomax, his wife Susan and his son, Ryan, as well as various individuals and events pertaining to the fundraising of his Operation Santa Claus project. This series begins with some historical photographs of hospital visits undertaken by previous individuals who played Santa Claus from the 1930s to the 1950s. This series on photographs also includes a few images of Harold Alkerton who was Jimmy Lomax’s Santa when Lomax was sick in the hospital as a child. Alkerton was the person who inspired Jimmy to play the role of Santa himself to other unfortunate children and adults. The photographs in this series also highlight the beginning of Lomax’s role as Santa Claus, Lomax family members, the Lomax family trip to Disney World, which they were awarded by the Hamilton business community, Santa visits to families, organizations and institutions, Operation Santa Claus fundraisers such as garage sales, picnics, toy rides, among others, as well as work parties, Jimmy Lomax on parade, the Santa Van and photographs of his awards and recognition. This series also includes a file of photographs with little archival context and unidentified individuals.

Subseries consists of correspondence pertaining to the refurbishing of the antiques, and refurnishing of the rooms of the house, including donations and repairs of antique items. After the transfer of Battlefield House to the Niagara Parks Commission, the Women’s Wentworth Historical Society noticed that although the Commission was doing a satisfactory job of maintaining the park grounds, the house was being neglected. To protect the house from falling into disrepair, and to ensure it was restored to its former glory, the Society persuaded the Commission to restore the house to its original state and refurnish the rooms to the time period when the Gage family occupied the house. The Commission consented and arranged and paid for Jeanne Minhinnick, a consultant with expert knowledge of refurnishing historic sites, to assist Society members with the project. Jeanne had previously worked on the restoration of Dundurn Castle and so was hired to provide her expertise on the Battlefield House restoration. She estimated the cost of the project to be about $25,000.00 and her advice and instructions feature prominently in this correspondence. To raise the money needed, the Society fundraised by asking individuals and companies for donations, but also held an auction to sell furniture in the collection that was not relevant to the time period. Furniture and items from 1830-1900 were sold by Sotheby & Company Canada Limited and the money was used to buy antiques from the 1790-1830 period. There is correspondence from the auctioneer regarding the sale of irrelevant items as well as a company pamphlet and a photocopied list of items available for auction. The donations raised by the Society came in the form of cash as well as actual antique items, and were donated by companies, organizations and individuals. Items included a piano, framed pictures, furniture such as beds, tables, desks, chairs, etc., as well as weapons, candles, a silver tea set, and cutlery. Some of the materials were also loaned to Battlefield House by the Royal Ontario Museum. The series contains some photocopies of sketches, pictures and information on various types of furnishings copied from publications on antique furniture used to guide the members in their project. The correspondence also pertains to repairs to current or donated furniture, the movement of furniture and other articles to other areas of the house, and the placement of furniture in various rooms. There is correspondence with government and tax officials to get a specific tax exemption status for items purchased for the refurbishment of Battlefield House, over and above the charitable tax exemption status the Society currently held. The application was successful, and the Society was granted an Ontario Retail Sales Tax Purchase Exemption Certificate, which could be used when any item was purchased for the house. The subseries correspondence also includes letters from various companies and foundations regarding donating to the refurnishing project, as well as thank you letters from the Society in response to the donations. Donors include, but are not limited to, banks, the Hamilton Spectator, The Hamilton Foundation, Bell Canada, Stoney Creek Dairies Limited, Simpson-Sears, Slater Steel, Molson Brewery, as well as a large donation from Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited of $12,000.00 for the furnishing of the dining room. During the processing of this fonds, the records for this series were found in a separate file from the financial and tax records. Given that they are specific to the refurnishing of Battlefield House and in many cases deal with non-financial donations and transactions, the records have been kept separate to maintain original order.

Subseries consists of 2 copies of the Military Encampment program of events given by the Ladies’ Committee of the Wentworth Historical Society, in November of 1895. The event which showcased what life was like 100 years earlier during the days of the pioneers, took place over 6 days and featured a children’s costume parade, Highland dances, theatrical performances, musical talent, artillery tents, uniformed military drills, and included daily luncheons and high teas. There is also a program for a Celebration Evening hosted by the Ladies’ Committee, held on November 22, 1901.

File consists of images of the "Kitchen of Tomorrow" Eaton's display for Hobbs Glass Limited, which was located at 51-53 John Street South.

File consists of photographs of vehicles from Life Savers & Beech-Nut Sale Company Limited, located at 225 Sanford Ave S. Life Savers Limited first operated in Canada at Prescott, Ontario, in 1916. In 1932, Life Savers bought out the Beech-Nut company of Canada, and the two companies amalgamated and began production in Hamilton in 1932. The original factory was at the corner of Cumberland and Sanford Avenue. A new building was erected in 1951 and was the only Life Savers plant in Canada, which produced millions of boxes of candy annually. In 2004, after more than 80 years of candy-making history in Hamilton, production of the candy ended.

Series includes materials related to concerts and entertainment at Wesleyan Ladies' College, often in partnership with the Conservatory of Music, such as concert tickets and programs, invitations to conversaziones and at-homes, and announcements for Senior Literary Society meetings.

Series consists of different publicity and marketing documentation used by the Hamilton Poetry Centre to promote their organizational mandate. Items include copies of the Hamilton Poetry Centre’s published newsletter Iambus, 39 posters and flyers advertising poetry readings hosted by the Hamilton Poetry Centre, as well as ones co-sponsored or hosted by other community organizations such as the Hamilton Public Library, McMaster University and the Canada Council, 3 press releases regarding poetry readings, one dated June 1, 1987 and the other two are undated, as well as 7 different styles of letterhead for the organization.

Subseries consists of legal documents relating to two family estates; the Grierson family estate and the estate of Mary Wallace. Documents in the Grierson file include correspondence and estate papers such as deeds, mortgage sales and payments, power of attorney records and two fire insurance polies. The Mary Wallace file contains some letter correspondence from the law firm Chisholm, McQuesten & Welby to Kate Millar, regarding a watch that was bequeathed to her by her friend, Mary Wallace.

Series consists of records relating to the Fountain Foundation Subcommittee. The Foundation was established in 1993 between the Society, corporations and members of the general public, in an effort to restore and rebuild the 1850s Gore Park fountain for Hamilton’s sesquicentennial celebration in 1996. The series contains project background information on the history of the fountain and its importance to Hamilton, copies of a proposal for the restoration of the fountain, meeting minutes, reports, financial and budget statements, balance sheets, fundraising event information, agreements made for work on the fountain and for contributions to the fund, correspondence, as well as marketing materials. The series also contains an audio cassette tape of public service announcements (PSAs), for local radio stations Y108 and 900 CHML, as well as photographs of the event held for the rededication of the Gore Park fountain. The Foundation raised over $500,000 for the reconstruction of the fountain and in October of 1996, the reconstructed fountain was turned back on by then mayor Robert Morrow and Hamilton area MPP Sheila Copps.

There are also 2 programs on the consecration of the Stoney Creek battlefield burial plot at Smith’s Knoll, dated May 3, 1908, a document detailing the inscriptions on the monuments at Stoney Creek Battlefield, including on the tower, the bronze tablets, as well as the memorial cairn at Smith’s Knoll, dated 1951, an invitation to the unveiling of a monument in the former military burial grounds on British Ordinance Lands at Burlington Heights near the High Level Bridge (now part of Hamilton Cemetery), dated June 20, 1926, and two copies of a program for the unveiling of a monument to René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. The series also consists of 2 tickets to a luncheon at Dundurn Park hosted by the Society, dated June 6, 1900.

Series consists of a note from jailor, Dennis Malone, indicating he received from Sergeant Morin of the 1st Battalion Incorporated Militia, prisoners Henry Henry and Patrick Farrell, privates in the above regiment, dated at Hamilton, January 4, 1839, a note written by William Winder, Surgeon, 1st Battalion Incorporated Militia, stating that he has examined Private Joseph Forster of No. 8 Company and determined that he is fit to undergo the sentence of solitary confinement meted out by court martial, dated at Hamilton, June 21, 1839, as well as a letter written by [W.B. Roberts?], to the officer commanding the guards, mentioning that he visited the Town and Ordinance Guard by day and night and found the sentries to be on alert at their posts, dated at Hamilton, October 15, 1842. All the documents in this series are original.

Series contains The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club Volunteer of the Year award plaque for 1999 and a plaque from The Bruce Trail Association recognizing The Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club as Trustee of the Escarpment. Series also consists of two Club badges including the Iroquoia End to End badge given to individuals who complete the trail from end to end, as well as the Snowshoe Challenge Badge given to individuals who complete six winter hikes in one season.

The Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario (formerly Coalition for Gay Rights in Ontario) was established on January 18 and 19, 1975. CLGRO was a non-profit organization of groups and individuals committed to working towards feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual liberation by engaging in public struggle for full human rights, in promoting diversity and access within our communities and by strengthening cooperative networks for feminism and lesbian, gay, and bisexual activism. After 34 years, they dissolved on May 2nd, 2009. Today, Queer Ontario continues the work of CLGRO and preserves their history and documents.

Series consists of meeting minutes, correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, reports, publication, briefs to the Members of the Ontario Legislature and their newsletters.

Series consists of 4 framed photographs including a portrait of Adolph Levy, son of Herman Levy, founder of the Levy Brothers Company Limited, a portrait of an unknown individual, possibly another Levy family member, and a photograph of the Thistle Squash Team from 1933 with the members identified, including Herman Herzog Levy in the back row, far left. Herman H. Levy is listed as one of the Winners of the Ontario Championships for that year. There is also a photograph of several unidentified men sitting for a formal dinner.

Series consists of inventories that were completed in various years by members of the Society to determine what items existed in the collection at Battlefield House, whether the items were relevant to the time period, and what items were still needed to complete the collection. There is an account book recording the inventory of household furniture and relics donated by members of the Women’s Wentworth Historical Society and members of the public to refurnish Battlefield House, dated 1921, an inventory of collection items and a record of items needed that was recorded circa the 1940s, and a detailed inventory recording contents such as books, brass items, china, embroidery, rugs, pictures, cutlery, weapons, and furniture such as beds, cupboards, desks, dressing tables, settees and sofas, tables, wash stands, chairs and lamps. The inventory dated 1950, records the object, the type of material, the time period, the origin, the donor, the size, and the date of acquisition. Some of the material was on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum, and other material was donated permanently by members of the Society and the public. An inventory of the contents of Battlefield House (completed by member Jean Gage), records the items dated pre-1830, or as having belonged to the Gage family, as well as reference cards with the type of material, a description, a reference number, and the name of the donor, dated 1950. There is also an undated inventory of furnishings for disposal.

Series consists of programs and events hosted by the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club and Junior Audubon Club. Programs include bald eagle hacking to stimulate eagle nesting and population recovery, as well as bird study groups and regular nature walks and outings. Former programs included the Wonders of Nature Show as well as the Nature in your Neighbourhood program, which featured Club members and community group speakers, discussing topics such as wildlife preservation and protection, nature photography and bird watching. This series also includes events such as the 85th anniversary of the Club, which unveiled the organization’s historic plaque at Princess Point, a lecture by Dr. Norman Pearson on the Bruce Trail, Hamilton NatureFest, and the Robert Bateman fundraiser dinner. This series contains photographs of the bald eagle hacking program and the Dr. Norman Pearson lecture.

Series consists of membership applications and other material related to Municipal Chapter membership, including correspondence and secretary's reports.

Series consists of lists of recipients of the Hamilton Soldiers Benefit Fund for daughters of deceased soldiers, provided by the Big Sisters of Paardeburg. After World War I, the Big Sisters of Paardeburg formed as an organization within the chapter to assist daughters of deceased Hamilton soldiers, known as the Little Sisters of Paardeburg.

Series consists of scrapbooks containing photographs and newspaper clippings which document the activities of the Lucy Morrison Chapter.

Subseries consists of a marriage contract between Captain William Logie and Anne Smith, who wed in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 8th, 1822.

Material consists of 1 audio recording on "Landscapes of Victorian Hamilton," by speaker Walter Peace.

File consists of correspondence between Waldon and Mamie L. Cunningham, of Toronto, regarding her grandfather, Dr. Rice, principal of Wesleyan for many years, and Cunnigham's mother, Sarah Elizabeth Starr Rice, who graduated with an M.L.A. degree from Wesleyan in 1864 and was principal of the school from 1868-1873, and regarding Mrs. Griffith and some of the other pupils.
